So after 3 months of hunting I found that thhe Geforce 8600GS was the card the reason it took so long to find is PCI is hard to find. People sell PCI-e saying it is PCI which is misleading. I was happy when I found this card.
I don't understand all the issue people are having. It is very easy to install and works great. This may help people. First uninstall any card drivers you have installed then shutdown and remove old card. Then install new card plug in monitor and turn on PC. When it auto detect the card cancel out. Then go to Nivida and download drivers or use the CD that came with the card. Then reboot and enjoy.
Great card for making an old PC come alive. It also has HDMI so I am guessing you can buy a new monitor with HDMI connection or hook it up to your HDTV via HDMI no HDCP problem. (not tested)
Installation was simple. Follow their instructions. It's basically: Install the drivers. Insert the card in the slot. restart the computer.
The downside of the "silent" feature of the card is that the heatsink sticks out a lot. The card is so fat that it basically covers two PCI slots. It's not an issue in my particular setup because I don't currently need that slot. There may be enough space to cram it in the end slot where the heat sink might actually be touching the computer case.
The video output seems just fine for internet, office applications, and email. I'm not a gamer, however.
The video on this new card is WAY better. My vista rating went from 2.2 to 3.7 (video still my lowest score). The graphics rating is now 3.7 (from 2.2), and gaming graphics rating is now 4.5 (from 2.5). I can tell you colors are clearer than before, more vivid than before, windows drag smoother than before. Also video is less jumpy, and HD video is actually pretty clear now. I can actually use Media Center now, before it would cause my whole system to bog down. Maybe the PCI is better, since it keeps the CPU free somehow. I am not a hardware expert, but the card is working perfectly.
Only issue was to make sure my monitors were at 75 refresh rate, otherwise text was moving around (not the video cards fault, just be sure to set the refresh rate properly based on you monitors capability).
A great upgrade for 50 bucks!!
Am I getting the one with the HDMI port or the S-video port? We'll see when it gets here. I'm ordering the product listed in the title, so I'm hoping it comes with the HDMI port, as that's what I need for my new monitor that isn't fully supported by my motherboard video interface, and my options for a card that supports 1920 x 1080 are very limited with a computer that has only PCI slots.
