Consider pros and cons before using as soil substitute

I was looking for smaller leca pebbles, but was unable to find a supplier. Somehow through a random Amazon search, I came across ceramsite. it wasn’t exactly what I was looking for, but it was just what I needed. It holds water for a longer time than traditional leca so I don’t need as large of a reservoir. It wasn’t nearly as dusty as leca so the cleaning process took a fraction of the time to get rid of the dust and debris. It’s also much gentler on the roots. It’s perfect for more fragile root systems. The con is, it doesn’t create as much air pockets as leca, so it’s more dense (and heavier). Another downside is because they’re so small, you need much more to fill your vessel. I was only able to fill one vase with the pouch which makes it incredibly expensive compared to other growing mediums.I would still recommend it, but maybe for something with a much smaller root system than my dracaena.

At first I thought the bag was a little small. I am using this as a top dressing around me cactus but it only takes a little to cover the soil and keep it from floating up during watering. It really sets the plants off wonderfully. It worked just liked I hoped it would.
