Plus she gives me a pretty amazing shout-out in Chapter 5, and believe me, I’m flattered.
With that up front, here are the things I love about Speak For Your Business.
: Michelle really encourages you to embrace where you are, and get speaking right away. No waiting for perfection to arrive, just allowing you to learn your lessons gracefully as you build up your expertise. If you need permission to speak out, she gives it to you!
: She has tons of ideas for creating content - if you are ever stuck for a subject, she has about a jillion creative ways for you to break through and bring your expertise to any situation.
: 3 Stories Every Business Needs to Tell is priceless. If you only read one chapter of ANY book on public speaking, read that one. I mean it.
: I LOVE the bonus kit - and you will too. If you long for a map to guide you through crafting a riveting presentation, look no further.
I have to say, I’m NOT the ideal audience for this book. While I do speak publicly, I have no ambitions or desires to make it a major part of my career path. Just not my thing. And reading from that point of view, I found myself wishing for more stories and more examples to get me inspired.
The book has a very ambitious scope, and Michelle covers a lot of information that felt like she was just scratching the surface. I would have been just as happy to see less information covered with far more depth. However, I think the book is ideal for people taking their first steps into public speaking, and more seasoned speakers will find plenty to hold their interest as well.
If you are already ready to take the stage and move your audience to action, you’ll find a wealth of practical tips. As a fellow Toastmaster, I’ve seen Michelle develop and implement these techniques, with standout results. These practices work. This book takes the fear out of public speaking, and even makes it fun.
If you are a newer entrepreneur, this book will help you connect with your value and communicate it beautifully. It gets you clear on your BIG IDEA, shifting your focus from “How do I sell?” to “How do I change lives?”
Finally, one theme of this book is that “speaking for your business is about radical transformation of the audience.” As a life coach, I believe this book can create a radical transformation in you. It guides you to face and embrace your fears, silence your inner critic, and find your voice. To gain confidence by being more yourself. By embracing what makes you different as a person and as an entrepreneur, you will see awesome ripple effects in your life. I heartily recommend this book.
The strategies on what to do when things go south in a speech were very helpful. Being a frequent public speaker, I found that her advice on how to recover from when you bomb in a speech to be of great benefit. I found the advice on how to practice a speech to be very helpful-- a must read.
Michelle share the process on of how to create a transformational talk, and how storytelling can enhance a speech. She gives great insights on how to connect with the audience and to empower those in the audience.
I am with Dr. Mazur that public speaking can be fun and she does a great job of presenting how to!
When Michelle Mazur asked me to read her book Speak Up for Your Business, I didn’t hesitate to do so. As a lecturer, it’s my job to stand up in front of students and actually teach them something. Despite my attempts at humor and expertly organized PowerPoint presentations, I feel I don’t make a connection with my students. My negative inner voice chews away at my self-confidence, and student evaluations reflect my doubts. I need help to craft and deliver my message, and Speak Up for Your Business has already given me tools to build my confidence, craft meaningful content, and deliver better presentations. For the personal training business, every single ounce of information in the book is written to help me get my message out there and to do it well.
Michelle tells it like it is; she’s straightforward and honest, and pulls no punches. And she quotes Jerry Seinfeld, which is always a plus in my book. After reading Speak Up for Your Business, I am inspired. Fall coursework re-writing and prep, here I come! Potential new training clients, watch out!
