Michelle Mazur, a longtime speaking coach with a Ph.D. in communication, makes public speaking easy—okay, not easy, but easier and less painful than doing nothing. You’ll become a much better speaker simply by following her practical advice and suggestions in her new book Speak Up for Your Business: The Entrepreneur’s Guide to Transformational Presentations that Tell, Sell, and Compel.
Nor is this your average “how to” book on public speaking. It’s more like a Toastmasters Manual on steroids. As a former Toastmaster myself, I felt I knew a lot about public speaking, but Michelle surprised me with all the great advice in this book, and she kept me interested all the way through with her down-to-earth humorous writing style and her entertaining stories. In other words, she speaks like she writes and vice-versa, and it has served her well, so she’s the perfect coach for anyone who wants to overcome the fear of public speaking or take his or her speaking abilities to the next level.
Right from the start, what I appreciated about Speak Up for Your Business was that Michelle tells people to quit trying to fake who they are. Her call to action includes, “Let’s stop copying other great communicators out there and start being ourselves!”
Michelle then walks the reader/would-be speaker through the process of crafting a speech.Read more ›
Plus she gives me a pretty amazing shout-out in Chapter 5, and believe me, I’m flattered.
With that up front, here are the things I love about Speak For Your Business.
: Michelle really encourages you to embrace where you are, and get speaking right away. No waiting for perfection to arrive, just allowing you to learn your lessons gracefully as you build up your expertise. If you need permission to speak out, she gives it to you!
: She has tons of ideas for creating content - if you are ever stuck for a subject, she has about a jillion creative ways for you to break through and bring your expertise to any situation.
: 3 Stories Every Business Needs to Tell is priceless. If you only read one chapter of ANY book on public speaking, read that one. I mean it.
: I LOVE the bonus kit - and you will too. If you long for a map to guide you through crafting a riveting presentation, look no further.
I have to say, I’m NOT the ideal audience for this book. While I do speak publicly, I have no ambitions or desires to make it a major part of my career path. Just not my thing. And reading from that point of view, I found myself wishing for more stories and more examples to get me inspired.
The book has a very ambitious scope, and Michelle covers a lot of information that felt like she was just scratching the surface. I would have been just as happy to see less information covered with far more depth. However, I think the book is ideal for people taking their first steps into public speaking, and more seasoned speakers will find plenty to hold their interest as well.
As a therapist in private practice, I received very little training on how to market my skills. Every workshop I have ever taken on the subject had us rehearse canned speeches and "elevator pitches" that never sounded like "me". And if a message doesn't sound like the authentic me, it would never be delivered. It never was. I struggled to get the message out about my practice for the first couple of years. You will likely skip a similar fate if you learn how to talk about your business in the ways you'll find outlined in this book.
Michelle quickly gets you excited and passionate about what it is you do and what it is you are about. Her tips are easy to understand, illustrated with stories you can relate to, and a writing style that makes you feel like you have a presentation coach sitting right next to you.Read more ›
