I bought this book counting on it being an entertaining read, and to study tactics but not expecting this much information. This book covers all crucial aspects of launching a successful insurgency. It will take you from the beginning planning stages to overthrowing an oppressive regime. I am now up to page 75 in this book, and so far I have read details on how to plan your operation, intelligence gathering, getting the locals on your side, direct and indirect support, engaging in fires, mobility, establishing an OP and LP, and assaults on enemy positions. If you want to wage a war, this book is for you. No ifs, ands, or buts about it.

This book has more than enough information to get you started on the path to having a successful insurgent operation. Note that no matter how much you study the topic of waging an unconventional war, it is nothing like actual experience. I would rate this book VERY HIGH on the "Must Read" list for anyone even remotely interested in small unit operations. If I had to give an on line abbreviation for this book, it would be this: T.M.I.

Most of the patrol skills etc. have been covered in greater detail and to better effect elsewhere. But this book contains an excellent summary of the techniques used to foment rebellion. The author seemingly presents the approaches with a straight face, arguing for "freedom and democracy and the right to worship god" while in fact showing how to be duplicitous, disingenuous, and downright deceitful. I suspect the author didn't see the contradictions but it really doesn't matter because the material is what counts. If anyone would like to understand why so many insurrections seem to be a by-the-numbers game this book will explain all. Why is the situation in Ukraine unfolding in a particular way? Because Putin, child of the KGB, read the Russian version of the same manual. Why did South American right-wing "freedom fighters" pursue a particular approach in the 1970s and 1980s? Because their US sponsors were working from manuals very much like this. So for anyone interested in how revolutions are engineered by outsiders, this is a great little resource.
