Low-level Night Vision Google operations are common place today; in 1982 they were slightly more than a tactical experiment. The author helped pioneer helicopter NVG operations.

Argentina invaded the Falkland Islands in March of 1982, Setting sail less than a week later, the suthor details preparations for war, to include flying while wearing NVG's. Time did not allow for a extended training program;, Pilots started flying combat missions three weeks after being handed a set of NVG's.

He takes the reader through initial combat operations on South Georgia, and then on the Falklands. He covers Argentine attacks on the British Task Force and finally his one way mission to insert a Special Air Service Team into Argentina. His crew lands in Chile, where they destroy their helicopter, and survive while trying to evade the authorities and make their way to safety.

The Falkland war will go down as a minor skirmish, but this book is a must read for those interested in Military History.

One of his main facts - the bombing of Stanley airfield by the Black Buck missions - is woefully inaccurate. It demonstrates his antipathy to the RAF and his lack of appreciation of the reasoning behind some of the decisions made. This is also borne out by his me, me, me attitude. It is surprising that he made Colonel without going to Staff College and being educated on such matters. Nevertheless, an interesting story to tell but, given the errors above, one wonders how much else is inaccurate.

I was in Chile 30 years ago and always wanted to know the secrets of the mission that led that particular helicopter to be destroyed near the city of Punta Arenas.

The story why the helicopter was destroyed there, told by the three crew members 30 years ago was crap. No one believe it.

Sure I recommend this book to my friends who like aviation themes.

Richard Hutchings had a particularly interesting seat during the Falklands War. Not only did he fly numerous insertion missions at night using night vision goggles, he also volunteered for a dangerous one-way mission to mainland Argentina. The mission was aborted but only after Hutchings, Wiggy and Pete had accomplished their daring navigation and flying—at 20' over the ocean and enemy Artentina—to reach their destination. A brave guy, an outstanding aviator and a damn good story-teller. For another bite into the Falklands War, this is a terrific read.
