In Special Snowflake Syndrome, Dr. Heather Silvio outlines the exact makings of a special snowflake, how their unrecognized social disorder wreaks havoc on the freedom of expression, and what to do when encountering someone who exhibits such unflattering and ultimately harmful behavior. It's a timely read, and Silvio goes through countless current examples of gross overrides to free speech, providing ample evidence that psychologists need to take a serious look at this as-yet unclassified mental illness sweeping the nation.
Does it sound like heavy reading? It isn't. I finished the book in an afternoon. Silvio has an unmistakable gift for drawing in her readers with her sophisticated and intelligent, yet equally entertaining voice. This isn't a book meant to scare or alarm anyone. If you've come this far, you already know of the danger of the special snowflake. You just might not have known that professionals like Silvio are hearing and seeing exactly what you've been witnessing all along. Finally, someone is willing to stick their neck out and say, "Hey, something's not right here!"
Even if the illness laid out by Silvio never makes its way into the annals of behavioral science, reading this book will make you even more adept at identifying this unfortunate trait every time it rears its arrogant, narcissistic, entitled, little head. And maybe finally we'll have the wherewithal to stop it in its tracks before it permanently stifles the free exchange of ideas.
