Did Kitty Wampus’s wheelchair really grow overnight?
Of course not, but that is what she imagines on this long-dreaded first day of middle school. Kitty wants to show her new classmates all that she can do, but she's worried they'll only notice her wheelchair and her missing leg.
Working hard at what some other kittens take for granted gets the attention of some cool cats at school. There's Amy, her soon-to-be-BFF, Jake, the Catnip's quarterback, and Stinky, too.
Kitty's quest leads to a daring attempt with her walker at a feline-filled Catnips Stadium. Will the fallout of what happens ruin a potentially epic night with Jake at the school dance that night? And how does Stinky’s mother’s fish stew impact who wins the game?
This award-winning book is the first in the Kitty Wampus series and features a kitten who shows that most anything is “pawsible.”

This is a wonderful story for any child with physical or psychological differences that make them feel different from other kids. It addresses the realities of needing to use a wheelchair or a walker, and how some people will not be kind because of it, but others will see past such things.
I enjoyed how Kitty was just a regular middle-school "kid" with the same fears, wants and needs as anyone her age. She's very relatable and learns how things often turn out better than we think they will. For this reason, the story is enjoyable and worthwhile for all kids, regardless of physical abilities.
The few illustrations are really wonderful and enhance the story. I personally had a bit of trouble with why a cat was having trouble on three legs by the time she's almost a teenager, and is still working so extensively with a physical therapist. I think that is just my adult mind interfering though. I believe kids will buy into the story without trouble. If they question it, this opens an opportunity to speak about how animals adapt to a missing leg and how that is different from humans. Not many books feature main characters in a wheelchair, so this book is a winner in the diversity category.
Overall - this is a wonderful book for kids 7-11. It is only 35 pages, so a quick read for some and a decent few night's read for others. This would be a fun book to read aloud to any age child. My daughter and I were still enjoying reading to each other when she was 12 or 13, so don't assume your child is too old to read to!
The first day of school came around, and Kitty had no desire to attend school. Her parents finally talked her into going, and Kitty took a deep breath and made her way to the bus stop. Her new life journey begins there. The author has skillfully dealt with important issues; we are all different in different ways. The reader learns to accept people the way they are, and who knows a beautiful friendship could be just around the corner. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book.
This particular book is a good model for how to treat children who are going through a transition from school to school and in need of special care and guidance. I especially appreciate that Steve Callahan has a background that gives him the inspiration for his book.
Kitty is a cat born with three legs who is just starting a new Middle School. She is nervous about what others might think of her using her wheelchair or walker. But she finds a good friend in Amy who helps educate some of the others in the school. Kitty is drawn to Jake with his one dimple. Jake is also very taken with Kitty.
I love the humour in this book and the way Kitty thinks and behaves like any other pre-pubescent child. I think all children will enjoy this book and take some life lessons from it. The illustrations are a good accompaniment to the text.
