I highly recommend buying this in combination with a ZAGG screen protector, because you never know what a kid will do to it.
One more thing, it does have a very chemically smell to it when it is first opened. Don't worry about it too much, I washed mine immediately and sprinkled some baking soda on it and let it sit for a day. The smell was completely gone afterwards.
Usage: Protect 6 year old's iPad mini
- Case is attractive to children (at least to mine)
- Deep enough ipad can be dropped on it's face without scratching or damaging the screen
- Overall padding is thick enough to protect ipad when dropped from any reasonable height (table top, or generally from the arm height of an "in-motion" 6 year old
- Easy to put iPad in and out of the case
- "Arms" make case easy to hold
- After about 1.5 years of continuous use (abuse?) case was getting worn, arms were starting to tear (hence the replacement)
- Thick protection can make it difficult to plug in the charging cord
At the end of the day the cons relatively insignificant. Overall this is a terrific iPad case for children and I recommend without reservation.
The side buttons are easily accessible while using this case, but the same can not be said for the home button. My 2 year old sometimes gets frustrated trying to push it (but then again she gets frustrated with spoons and socks and Elsa and you get where I'm going...) but even I get annoyed and how difficult it can be to squeeze my finger down to properly push the Home button. And I have small hands!
The stock photos of this product are pretty misleading. It looks like you're going to get this seamless, high quality foam product. And while the foam is very durable, it's not revolutionary. $30 is a lot to pay for a piece of foam cut out to look funny. Also, the seams all the way around the case is VERY pronounced. So much so that we had to trim it to get the thing to stand upright on its own. Now it works fine, but for $30 I would have expected it to be ready to go.
I've had a few Speck iPhone cases and have ALWAYS been very impressed with the quality, and that's why I was okay buying a $30 iPad case for my toddler. I'm glad that it's durable, but I wasn't as impressed with the fine details of this case, as I had been with my iPhone cases in the past.
One problem is charging the iPad. It was very difficult to get the charger plugged in. You have to move the "arm" on that side of the iPad and then get it lined up through the thickness of the case. She couldn't do it at all, and I had trouble doing it.
She couldn't use her headphones because, again, the case was too thick. Her headphones have a connector with a 90-degree angle at the end that plugs into the tablet, and it wouldn't work with this case at all. I tried finding another set of headphones, but couldn't find any that were made for little kids (I like her to use the kids' headphones not only for their smaller head size but also for the loudness limit).
When she set up the case to stand up to watch videos, it stood straight up rather than at an angle, which turned out to be impractical to her way of watching. Even if it's sitting on a table, it would have been a difficult angle to watch. And as for standing it up on her bed or a couch, it wasn't sturdy enough to stay up on those surfaces.
For these reasons, we stopped using this case. Maybe it could work for others who have different needs. It certainly is protective! But with headphones, daily charging, and angle of use, this was not the case for us.
