I'll be concentrating on reviewing Halloween themed book thru the month of October for the second year running so feel free to "see all my reviews" most recently if you're of a like mind and am looking for some spooky stuff this time of year.
The new girl at the pizza place just wants to get off on time to hang out with her boyfriend. Her mentor seems just as keen to watch the clock, so all should go well. But knocking on the door of the Dudes’ home isn’t quite the same as walking the path to the old witch’s house, even if you do know she wasn’t really a witch and childhood tales had no basis in truth. Just an old woman. Just be nice to her...
The final customer wants all the fillings, and Enid’s going to learn more than she expected on this short trip into the paranormal. Luckily Brett’s not just a good driver. He knows his roads and his ghosts. And this story’s fun!
Disclosure: I loved book 1, am looking forward to book 2, and couldn’t resist a free copy of this short story.
Hold on tight roadtrippin' fans, I've got a shocking revolation: Brett has a job. I know; I know. I didn't believe it either, but it's true! "Uncle" Gonzo got Brett hired on at King's Pizza, just as he suggested (threatened) in SINKING DOWN (Road Ghosts #2). Brett's even a driver, which shows you exactly how intelligent the Gonz really is. But, will Brett's new "abilities" affect his work performance?
There's also a new character on the scene. This short story is written from Enid's POV. She's a law-school drop-out, trying to make ends meet. The premise is that it's Valentine's Day. Enid wants to finish up early for a date, but she gets paired with Brett as her pizza delivery driver. Along their route, Enid is forced to witness one bit of strange behavior after another, as Brett is asked to solve this or that paranormal problem by their customers. Meanwhile, her significant other is impatiently texting her to hurry. Will she become a "true believer" and keep Brett's hide out of hot water?
Even if the idea of Brett training a new employee on pizza delivery procedures doesn't crack me up all on its own, the byplay between Enid and her boyfriend via the texts adds an extra dimension to the humorous dialog. After all, Enid hasn't read the Road Ghosts novels, so she has no reason to believe Brett isn't dangerously unstable. I would have chickened out in her position. Forget the repeated versions of, "Stay and keep my job, or run away from the crazy guy?" I'd be history. I'd be a freakin' research paper (very historical). Apparently, I'm not cut out to deliver pizzas or chase ghosts.
Here's what you might have missed in Eric Garrison's Road Ghosts series:
Four 'Til Late (Road Ghosts)
Sinking Down (Road Ghosts)
Thanks to Eric Garrison for the ARC of this short story. I'm always up for providing free reviews (and marketing freelance services), as long as authors and publishers understand that gifting me a book isn't "buying" a positive review. "Honesty" is what my readers count on. Of course, it helps that I am granted access to so many topnotch books!
