About the Author
J. Carson Black’s books have been praised by bestselling authors Jeffery Deaver, John Lescroart, David Morrell, Gayle Lynds, and T. Jefferson Parker, who declared her “a strong new voice in American crime fiction.” Her first Cyril Landry thriller, The Shop, reached #1 on the USA Kindle Bestseller list, and her crime thriller series featuring homicide detective Laura Cardinal became a New York Times and USA Today bestseller. Black’s other suspense titles starring Laura Cardinal are The Devil’s Hour, Cry Wolf, and the Daphne du Maurier Award–nominated Darkness on the Edge of Town. Her second Cyril Landry thriller, Hard Return, followed The Shop as a popular and literary success. Although Black earned a master’s degree in operatic voice, she was inspired to write her first novel, a ghost story, after reading The Shining. She lives in Tucson, Arizona. This one starts with Jolie Burke. She currently lives in Branch, New Mexico. She's a detective for the Tobosa County Sheriffs Office.
Right now Jolie is bugging out of her house. There are at least three men headed toward her door. These men are silent and moving with stealth. They aren't at her house to borrow a cup of sugar.
Jolie does have a dog. Rocky. He's a Rottweiler but a watch dog he ain't.
Jolie makes it to her car and takes off. Of course she is followed. Jolie discovers that the gas tank was punctured so she runs out of gas.
The car makes it into an old garage and Jolie heads for an abandoned Circle K which has a pay phone. She's not able to use her cell so the pay phone is a god send.
Once at the phone she calls the only man she knows who can help her make it out alive. Cyril Landry.
Jolie and Landry were thrown together and came out alive after a knock down drag out fight for their lives in Florida a few years ago.
Cyril Landry the ex Navy SEAL is one hard and very capable guy. He's the only man Jolie would ever trust with her life.
So begins another great Landry read by Black.
This one has Cyril, Jolie, Eric the Red a former SEAL teammate of Landry's, a man named McBride who heads a local militia unit, a man named Deboer, his son Jace, his half sister Carla Venetti who's an FBI agent, the Sheriff and his less than honest department, a Landry who is arrested and spends time in jail, a Landry who defends himself against a killer cellmate, three experimental farms, stealth technology, friends, a serial killer, members of the US Army, enemies, murder, death and Cyril Landry and his team figuring the whole thing out and doing what it takes to stay alive.
Five Stars and then some. Super read.
Book #3 opens with a distress call to Landry from friend Jolie Burke (a homicide detective with the New Mexico Sherriff’s Department.) As is his way, he drops everything and rushes in to help, only to find her MIA. Landry surmises that if she’s not dead, she has gone underground. Which doesn’t surprise him with New Mexico’s reputation for police brutality and corruption, especially in the small town of Branch, where the sheriff is under the control of the town’s wealthiest resident.
I was immediately hooked by the tension filled opening pages. Jolie’s desperate escape in the middle of the night from her desert home fires up the engines for this supercharged page turner. And the tension doesn’t ease up anytime soon. Who are the bad guys? The fake militia? The FBI? The town lawmen? The man that owns the town?
J. Carson Black has honed her craft to perfection with characters that spring off the page and sear themselves into your memory. With prose that sings. With compelling plots and technical savvy that informs as well as entertains. Her protagonist, Cyril Landry, is an assassin extraordinaire who can kill you with a #2 pencil while correcting your faulty grammar.
Black knows her stuff! I highly recommend SPECTRE BLACK.
Most of the story in this book takes place in and around Branch, New Mexico where Jolie Burke worked as a deputy with the local police dept. And she calls Cyril Landry for help as she escapes town and goes into hissing close by until he finds her. Jolie tells Landry she works for a thoroughly corrupted police dept. & now she is suspicions about various factions in town that are after her.
The book has many things of interest including a local militia, corrupt F.B.I. agent who is related to
The Denbor' s a wealthy corrupt family there involved in gun running, and mysterious stealth technology on their farmland just out of town.
I enjoyed the read and would recommend this book to anyone looking for anyone looking for a great read.
PS to the author, please, please write more Cyril Landry books. I'm truly hooked on this character.
