Editorial Reviews
For the 24th movie in the James Bond oeuvre, "Spectre," Oscar-winning director Sam Mendes has again enlisted 6-time Grammy winner Thomas Newman (`Skyfall,' `American Beauty') to write a breathtaking original score. The soundtrack will have the added bonus of an instrumental version of the new Bond theme song, "Writing's On The Wall." The "Spectre" theme song will be sung by fellow multiple Grammy-winner Sam Smith, the first time a male has sung the theme song since "Thunderball."

Admittedly, in "Casino Royale", Arnold saved the James Bond theme for the very end, when Daniel Craig had established himself as "James Bond" in the rebooted franchise. It was an origin story, so it made sense to save it for the end. The theme was a little underused in "Quantum of Solace", but it was there--and in both scores, the "James Bond sound" was ever-present.
What is this "James Bond sound"...? Well, you're not going to play the "James Bond Theme" for 2 straight hours or people would run from the cinema with their hands over their ears screaming half-way through. But the "Bond sound" is a bold, brassy orchestration that, even when not using the actual "James Bond Theme", should instantly be identifiable as an entry into the James Bond canon. Exotic locations and romance needs sweeping romantic music full of melody (Think "Mujahadin and Opium" from "The Living Daylights"; "Venice Is for Lovers" from "Casino Royale", "The Wedding" from "You Only Live Twice", "Bond Meets Tania" from "From Russia With Love", etc., etc.) The action music needs to sound like it is prepared to leap full-throated into the James Bond Theme even if it doesn't actually do so. Much of Arnold's work in "Casino Royale" sounded very "Bond", without actually using that theme. Think of "Time to Get Out", and "The Palio" from "Quantum of Solace", or "Miami International" from "Casino Royale": instantly identifiable as "Bond" without actually using the theme THAT much. The "sound" of James Bond was there!
Now, I will be the first to agree that action scores are not typical of Thomas Newman, who I actually admire as a composer. That's why I was a little worried when they gave him the job of scoring "Skyfall" instead of Arnold. While the actual score for that film was halfway decent as a regular "thriller/action" score, it did not carry enough of the "James Bond sound". Someone (not a great film score buff, but an occasional listener) who listened to it with me when it first came out, about halfway through, said: "This is a James Bond score? It doesn't sound very 'James Bond'." It was exactly what I had been thinking, but was afraid to say. It sounded more like an entry into the Bourne films. Even the "great reveal" of the Bond theme on the "Skyfall" disc was great... until it ended abruptly and without finishing. For me, while the CD was an easy-listen as a normal action movie score, it not a strong enough Bond score, and for that, I considered it a failure. If you're going to do a Bond score, why be afraid of the Bond sound? A lot of others agreed, if the reviews I've read of that CD are any indication. Indeed, Adele's theme song sounded more like a good James Bond score than most of that CD did.
This is the foundation behind my review for this CD. Of course, with Newman's return for "SPECTRE" (it's an acronym for the organization, so it should be in capital letters), I was hoping... Hoping that fan outrage would have gotten through to someone there... That Newman would go back and listen to some original Bond scores and try to do something that at least paid homage to the original "Bond sounds". I would say that he's taken a *small* step forward, with some variations on the Bond theme creeping in to a few places. There's some great general music in here, but again it sounds more like a Bourne film, or (in places), like music out of the original Spider-Man trilogy. Much of the action themes from "Skyfall" are heavily recycled, and whereas the Bond theme was partially unleashed in its full glory and something like its original orchestration ONCE on the "Skyfall" CD, that doesn't happen AT ALL in this one. As a standalone CD, since it uses about half of "Skyfall's" CD music, if you own that CD they might want to consider giving you a 50% discount. This CD is EXPENSIVE...! Some say that there's more music in the movie; of course there is... but then put some of the fresh stuff on the album and leave the "Skyfall" recycles out. The only reason the album gets 3 stars is because the rest of the music is decent for, say, a Bourne movie or another action film franchise.
If you're going to do a James Bond score, at least make it sound like a James Bond score. Be willing to explore new territory and incorporate modern sounds, but for the love of cinema, at least write a score that sounds like it fits the genre! It's disappointing; again.
However - I have to say im extremely disappointed to find that the MAIN TITLE for Spectre "Writing's on the Wall" was not included on this disc... Instead we get an instrumental version. Which is great and all - but for a $20 CD we better get the freakin main title instead of having to resort to the digital compressed recording that's on iTunes or Amazon. Not sure if Universal Music Classics knows this, but these digital downloads sound like garbage compared to the recordings on disc and its pathetic that I have to dish out more money for something that should have been on the disc in the first place.
I'll think twice about buying another Bond soundtrack again.
I assume they released it as a separate single only. #LAMESAUCE
So... if you are interested in the actual original music for SPECTRE, this CD is what you want... HOWEVER.... if you desire to have the theme song, then you will disappointed, like I was. Sorely.
The design of the cover is nice though and it's gatefold. Inner slaves have nice photos as well.

Hooe no time to die has better score. Although the song is like this one's. Awful
Mr. Newman could do better...
Not to Barry.s and Arnold.s scoring. I.thought the Skyfall soundtrack has the edge on this one. The title track was lack lustre, thankfully not included on album. A nice instrumental version was here. There are parts of Skyfall dotted in.
Unfortunately can only give it 3 stars.
I.ve just bought OHMSS on 180 gram vinyl. 5 stars
