Volume 18 is another great addition to the series. It's now 304 pages, slightly thicker than Spectrum 17. Available in either hardcover or paperback. Binding is great for a book this thick.

There are close to 500 pieces of art from different type of publications and purposes. Also included are some unpublished ones.

The Grand Master Award recipient is Ralph McQuarrie in this volume. He's the popular Star Wars artists. The winners for the Gold and Silver Awards are Ryohei Hase, Sam Weber, David Palumbo, Dan Dos Santos, Rebecca Guay, Joao Ruas, Kekai Kotaki, Tomasz Jedruszek, David Meng, Akihito, Android Jones, Brom, J.S. Rossbach and Scott Brundage. There are many other prominent and new artists featured.

For the quality of work represented, this book is a tremendous bargain for the money.

I love this book! normally with spectrum books there only 10 or so pages of art that I really like, and then there is some art that seems repeated or it is just not as special to me, but in spectrum 18 you can find a lot of really good art, page after page we were shocked and very inspired by what we were looking at. Really happy with my purchase!

Not sure what the rest of you think but this book just gets better and better with every volume. The inspiration one gets as an artist or gazer is very strong. They choose the best of the best to appear in these books. Hopefully one day I will be among those elite (...he says while his fingers are crossed) :-)

I have all of the SPECTRUM books, and I will continue to buy them in the future. However, this issue of the book, and the last couple have to me fallen off in creativity. I believe the artists themselves are at the top of their form, it's the subject matter I find rather dull, but hey, that's me being subjective.

If you're into seeing current fantasy, surreal, (dark) and/or science-fiction art this series is a must have.

I own many of the 18 Spectrum books (one put out each year) and find myself returning to them over and over to look at all the incredible art.

There is an introduction and a few features in the beginning of each book but the images reign supreme.

Other than a credit and brief description of the image (artist, medium, client etc) it is simply page upon page of jaw dropping digital and traditional paintings (and a few photo-manipulations).

There are also sections in each book devoted to sculptures (in mediums of all kinds) that fit the categories above.

The only downside is that some of the images need to be printed fairly small, so I keep a magnifying glass handy if I really want to do some study.

If you have the $$...you'll probably want to start adding these books to your collection.

I have been purchasing the Spectrum books for several years now, and I have yet to be disappointed with this spectacular series. The range of styles is sure to stimulate the imagination. I do wish that more space could be devoted to some of the individual works so I could savor the details but that would result in a very unwieldy book, so it isn't a serious complaint.

The books are a must-have for anyone interested in the visual side of the fantasy and science fiction genres, or those who simply enjoy art that engages the brain as well as the eyes. This volume is no exception and is highly recommended.

If you love art and fantasy this is the book for you. I've been collecting it since Spectrum 8 and every book has been a great inspiration. It's nice to see how certain artist develop and it's even nicer to see the caliber of artistic talent out there. I'm very impressed and will purchase future editions for sure.
