I have a very odd little laundry room - and calling it a 'room' is being generous. It's a hall with a recessed wall space wide enough to fit a washer, dryer, and a shelf above them. This hall also contains a 1/2 bath, a walk-in closet, my back door and another recessed area where my storage freezer goes. Finally, this hall is visible from my front door - so if you come knocking on my front door and I open it, you are able to look past me to peer straight down the hallway in which my laundry is hanging and see (at least the lower half) of my back door.
Why just the lower half? Because in order to have somewhere to hang clothes to dry that can't go in the dryer, I had to suspend a rod across the hallway near the ceiling. And there the clothes hang for a couple of days until they're entirely dry and can be taken upstairs to the closet.
This drives me crazy, and it trips every OCD trigger I have about cleaning & organization and a dire need for things to be "put away" and "out of sight."
Say hello to the Spectrum Over-the-Door Wardrobe Rack. Yay!
This item fits perfectly on the inside of the aforementioned walk-in closet. It hangs beautifully on the door, and the hooks on top are thin enough that they in no way interfere with the door closing. Though this rack is wide enough to accommodate plenty of hanging wet clothing, it is also narrow enough to clear the frame of the doorway so it isn't catching every time I go to open or close the door. And finally, the rack is durable enough to handle 15+ pieces of wet clothing without bowing or showing any signs of strain.
You just can't imagine how happy this makes me. I can open my closet door, which puts the inside of the door - and thus the rack - within perfect reach of my laundry area. I can hang my wet clothes on it and simply leave the door open while they dry. If I'm having guests over, or someone knocks at the front door, I can quickly swing the closet door shut for the duration, and everything looks nice and neat in seconds.
My husband is also pleased with this rack. He actually prefers getting dressed/undressed downstairs. When he comes home in the evening, he likes the convenience of being able to take off his work cloths, place them in the laundry, and slip into his fleece pajamas. He doesn't want to tromp upstairs, first... he's eager to relax in his recliner and unwind. So I've taken to hanging a shirt & pants (with socks & underwear tucked in there too) on the rack each day, replacing the set he put on that morning before work. When he gets up the next morning, his clothes are there waiting for him to change into, and he just hangs his pajamas back up and heads to work. He's really inordinately happy about this arrangement!
Suffice it to say, I consider this a very worthwhile purchase.
so this was like increasing his storage in his room. We used plastic bins to store everything else inside the closet and out of sight.
The rack is sturdy and holds quite a bit of clothing. We've hung everything from suit pants to jeans and loads of tshirts, to winter coats on this rack, and it holds it all without bending.
In fact, we ordered a second rack for downstairs to hold my husband's work uniforms. When they changed from
regular jeans to work uniforms, we found ourselves with no place to store extra clothing. So, we ordered one of these
just to hold his work clothing, and it works even better for that. (The work uniforms come on dry cleaning hangers and the rack can hold many more of those. My son uses the chubby plastic hangers you buy at discount stores.)
I highly recommend this rack - there is no installation, it won't leave holes in your doors or walls, and holds clothing like a champ.
If I could make one change, it would be adding a flat rack that comes over the top of the hanger rack to place things like shoes or hats on... but you just can't beat the clothing storage on this one.
Instead we found a bracket at Target. It was about twice the price, but fit the door better and had a much more stylish look.
