4.0 out of 5 starsGreat machine, un-great seller
Reviewed in the United States ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ on December 6, 2013
After trying to give Whirlpool a chance and using their new low-water cabrio system for a while, I found that just wasn't cutting it.
Sure, if you only have lightly soiled clothes it works fine. But when it comes to items with actual debris, forget it. My husband brings home work jeans that occasionally call for steel wool and gnashing of teeth. Watching those jeans get gently dribbled with a few cups of water and slowly spun in a circle was more than a little frustrating. I mentally made up for the washer's lack of agitation by just observing this cycle of non-cleaning happen three times in a row, only to pull the jeans out and find there was still sand and dirt on them that I could brush off with my hand. ANYWAY.

After much research, I found my options for a washing machine that actually uses a tub of water and beats the clothes clean were limited. I took a chance on the Speed Queen not knowing for sure if it would pay off. Ultimately, I'm very happy with the washer. It's a shorter cycle than most (about 40 minutes tops with extra rinse), but I like that since I can start a load at night and switch it to the dryer before it gets super late. It still washes the clothes well, so I don't feel like the shorter time cuts corners on cleanliness. The amount of washing space is good too. I've run queen size comforters with room to spare, but I can also reach the clothes in the bottom of the washer without falling in.

My only beef with ordering this item was with the company itself and the shipping people they used. I placed my order on November 1st, and was given a delivery window between the 7th and the 13th. I didn't get my washer till the 26th, which was nearly 2 weeks after the latest delivery date promised. Trying to communicate with the seller was a hassle since there's no customer service phone number, only email, and responses were slow and vague. The shipping company was also difficult to work with, as they left automated messages that started half way through the recording, leaving out important information. They wouldn't call to schedule a day when I could be there to sign for it, they just told me when they'd be in my area, which was only once a week. I've had much better experiences with other sellers and shipping companies.
Was it worth it? Well, I finally have my washer and I'm happy with its performance. Would I order from the people at HCcost again? Sorry, nope.

UPDATE:
It's been almost 3 years now since I bought this washing machine, and I have to say I'm still impressed. This Speed Queen is clearly a hard-working woman. She has had to go through about a million loads of boys' jeans and my husband's work clothes that pick up nasty crawl-space gunk. She does not settle for seven-year-old-boy-in-a-hurry clean. No sir, she keeps the bar up at full on Mama-clean! And never once has she ever complained or broken down or taken a sick day. Now that is awesome. Seriously.

2.0 out of 5 starsNot impressed at all

I have to stand up in the midst of these glowing remarks and speak my peace. While these washers seem to be wonderful - mechanical (which was one of our requirements when we were looking), stainless tub, top load, real water temp (hot is really hot) - they don't wash dirty clothes worth beans. The washing cycles are too short, and they don't rinse out well - even with the second rinse. In addition, for example, my son came home the other day from hiking with his friends and the bottom of his pants were dirty and sandy. No problem, right? Throw them in the washer with the second rinse and we should be good. After all, that is as simple as it had been for the last almost 20 years with my Maytags. Sorry, major fail. All it did was migrate the dirt to other clothes in the batch and to other parts of the pants! Not only that, there was dirt and dirty water in the bottom of the tub. And no, I did not over-load my wash.

Other minor issues: The top discolors quickly and easily - it's just paint, not porcelain. The hinge on the lid also squeaks and has to be lubricated.

These are ok for those who may not need heavy duty washing as we do since we have four kids at home. But if you really need good cleaning - try something else. Our friends who bought the Samsung front loaders have been very pleased over the last 2.5 yrs they have owned theirs. This Speed Queen was a mistake. My dryer review will list separately, but it has been even worse.

We have had ours for about two years now and we are thoroughly disappointed. If we could afford to dump these and get the Samsungs that we should have bought in the first place, we would do it in a heartbeat. I give it two stars since it does at least function and nominally wash clothes. But hate it we do.

Update as of February 2014.
This washer continues to disappoint. It does not rinse all the soap out, continues to wash poorly and leaves dirt and sand in the bottom of the tub. When you look carefully, the holes in the tub are not positioned for the dirt, sand, etc. to drain out of them with the water - the holes are more up on the side so the heavier sediments just gather on the bottom of the tub. Not only that, but that sand and dirt just seems to get re-distributed throughout the load and onto different parts of the dirty clothes.

The company is not helpful in trying to deal with these things. Come on, it's a washing machine - after all these years can't you get it right?

UPDATE as of 12/19/2014
Well, I updated my rating for the washer to two stars. It has been doing its designed job in an OK fashion. We have adjusted to its challenges, kinda of, but still not happy about the fact that the wash cycle is so short and it won't wash really dirty clothing very well, just transferring dirt around to different parts of the clothing (usually pants my kids have been camping in). Still noisy and since the top is just painted, it is starting to discolor now as well.

FINAL UPDATE as of 2/7/2015
Well, the washer left the house last Thursday, never to return. Goodbye short wash cycles, inability to get clothes clean when they are really dirty, goodbye poor rinsing. Sorry, but it just didn't balance out the manual controls, straight hot water and a wash tub that actually filled with water. It just couldn't wash clothes very well.

In it's place is now a Maytag MHW7100dw front load washer. After just a few days, we have found that it can wash clothes in very little water just as well - in fact better than the Speed Queen did - RIP.

This is a great machine, the build quality alone puts everything else to shame. The one gripe is legitimately dirty clothes require the heavy duty extended cycle to get clean.

March 9th, I am going to make this short, If you want a washer that will clean your cloths and a great quality machine. This is the one!!! buy it!!! you will not be disappointed. out performs all others on the market.

OK! Back again. Now the 17th of April and wanted to add to my comment on this washer.
Wife has not complained any more. that gives you a hint! also the machine is top notch, washes clothes in 1/2 hour and gets my construction clothes clean the first time.
Really folk's, this is the best washer on the market. after 40 years of buying washers. you get the idea.
I hope this is my last one and if not in 20 years I hope that they still make this one. I would if I had space?
buy another one just to have FOR THE FUTURE OR GIVE TO MY KIDS.

1.0 out of 5 stars I guess I just got a lemon!
Reviewed in the United States ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ on September 15, 2015
I guess I just got a lemon! Broke down on 5/10/15 and was at the second repair shop until 9/9/15. Washer was 1 1/2 years old at time of first break down. (First let me say that I did not buy the Speed Queen washer on Amazon.) I really wanted to love this washer, it took me awhile to talk my wife into this "supposed" super high quality washer from the more modern LG front loader she wanted. To make a very LONG story as short as possible. On 5/10/15 my 1 1/2 year old washer broke down making a horrible noise. Called speed queen (still under warranty) they gave me several #'s to approved repair shops. Several days latter they show up must take machine to shop, many days later they call that transmission is bad and must order part. OK I am fine up at this point, all is unfortunate but it happens. As a side note, the leak that was caused by the transmission seal has warped my 6 month old wood floor . "Sorry I did say I would make it short". In conclusion; the machine just had it's 3rd transmission installed along with new seals and other misc parts. Now I am sure most of the issues after the initial break down are due to poor technician repairs, but they are Speed Queen approved repair shops.
So a less than a two year old machine has been down for 4 months and the best Speed queen is willing to do is add an additional year to the existing warranty, which subtracting the 4 months down time is actually only 8 months.. In my book this machine is obviously a lemon and should of been replaced. I will be selling it as soon as I get it back and buying my wife the machine she wanted in the first place.

After many years of dependable service from Maytag washers we had previously, I searched for a supplier that could match that record. Maytag does not offer the quality it had in the past, but it appears Speed Queen does. The quality is noteworthy, and I expect the washer to be capable of many years of good service. This is not a washers with lots of bells and whistles, but just a very straight forward functional unit. So far, we haven't found anything to complain about. There are plenty of washing options available through the legacy dial/timer system, and this is part of the source of reliability. If you are looking for a washer with a traditional agitator, normal water levels and control, and good construction this is a very good washer.

1.0 out of 5 stars It flooded my house...three times!
Reviewed in the United States ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ on November 1, 2018
I have had this washer repaired twice. The water fill sensor fails. The worst damage was done when I was away from home. $15,000.00 dollars (or more, final number not in yet) worth of damage to my home. The other two times it failed I was at home. New part installed I felt it was good to go. Nope, major damage to flooring (ceramic and oak hardwood), sub floor, drywall, area rugs, and insulation under the house. The crawlspace was flooded too. I am sick as I had just recently installed new floors, painted, and updated my home. Even though it cleaned and spun clothes really well, I can't recommend speed Queen as planned obsolescence has ruined my home. Thanks Speed Queen! Oh, btw, when a part fails three times aren't there lemon laws?

Me and my wife have been marry for 49 years. We have tried a lots of washers. When I retire I brought a front loader GE washer that was a mistake. The washer was built good but the electronics was made real cheap. It gave trouble all the time. We have not had this machine long but can tell it is way above a lot of the newer machines. Runs quite and cleans very good. Without all that cheap electronics. It is A well build washer. We are very happy with this washer. It has a large tub that holds a lot of clothes in one load. That was the first thing my wife said. Would buy again. dragonfly

1.0 out of 5 stars Wash your clothes in grease!
Reviewed in the United States ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ on October 18, 2013
I got the SQ AWN 542 delivered yesterday. The inside drum (where you put the clothes) is covered in black grease. (You won't see it, but if you run a paper towel in the bin, you'll see it easily.) The dealer where I bought it sent out another one today. Same problem. The delivery guy wrecked 2 white towels trying to get rid of the grease. Gave up. I called SQ headquarters. Wow. They are rude. They gave me 3 names of service people to call. None of them would service the machine (since I didn't buy it there). The place where I bought it won't service it either. SQ rep told me to clean the machine myself (at my expense) or return it. The dealer won't take it back. SQ is NOT helpful and not willing to stand behind their product. The dealer said he'd send me a 3rd machine. (Do you have 3 days to devote to waiting for a washing machine? I don't.) All I wanted was a washing machine. Sorry, but I spent more than $900 (with tax) and all I have is a headache. I have wasted most of 2 days and still can't do the laundry. Does it work? Don't know. I'm not willing to wash my clothes in grease.

We purchased out top about a month ago but just installed it about a week ago. It is so much better than the front load we had for about 3 years. The top load has more water for getting the clothes clean and the wash time is about 1/3 of the front load. There are no bells and whistles like our front load but it cleans your clothes. What else can you ask for?
