Music is ok. Graphics are really good. Those are the only positives to this game. First off, this isn't so much a racing game, but more of a avoid the cops game. Yes, you drive fast and race other cars, but your success depends almost entirely on your ability to avoid getting rammed by zombie cop cars. Game progression is very very poor. If you get stuck on a level, the only thing you can do is keep playing previous levels until you accumulate enough cash to buy a better car. The problem is the cars are so similar to each other that buying the next car isn't going to help you much. There are a couple upgrades (mods), but they are really expensive, add little benefit, and are only good for a single race. Some races you don't have a choice for the car. So for those, you are out of luck.
Then there are the cops. It's quaint at the start, but no matter how fast you go, they are faster even with nitro. They make the game NOT FUN. They ruin this game. After a few "races" the cops out number any other traffic on the road and just harass you unless you cause them to wreck, which slows you down so much you lose the race. The cops also rarely harass the other racers. It stops being a race and more of a self defense (but without the upgrades) game which is not what i paid for.
Tilt controls work fine, but I prefer a touch control interface. This game offers both but the touch controls are next to impossible to work. Drifts are unnecessary and difficult to finesse. It was really difficult to know the exact hot spot to hit the brake. It is too close to the nitro and I often hit the nitro when wanting to brake and vice versa.
All of the racing scenes are dark. Think dirty urban dystopia. That's just the art direction, which I have no problem with. It does however force you to crank the brightness up on your device which kills the battery. Additionally, many of the EA load screens are pure bright white which burns your retinas if you aren't ready for it. And with your brightness cranked up the white screens also diminish your battery with no added benefit. I played this on the kindle fire hd. It might be limited to Amazon's OS, but this game doesn't close without shutting down the device entirely. It just keeps running in the background eating the battery. Also on the HD, it can be laggy at times. There are also some bugs in the game where I got some white overlays on the screen that wouldn't go away unless you restarted the app which meant rebooting the kindle. This happened every 2-3 races.
Finally, there is a "store" where you can buy stuff but it is all absurdly expensive. The "rookie pack" is the cheapest and costs $500k. Prize money for winning a race starts at about $10k and only went up to about $12k after a dozen races. There are no other ways to earn cash. It's not clear what you even get with this rookie pack but you'd long be past rookie levels before you could ever accumulate that much money, even if you just replay the first couple races and never buy anything else. You could instead purchase it with real money for $3-$4. But there is no indication what you get. Considering the poor choice of "upgrades" on the cars, I doubt this pack would provide any value.
Compared to Asphalt 7 from GameLoft, this game is pathetic. Factor in the price difference and I can't believe anyone would ever purchase this game. I can't believe I wasted money on this. I expected 7x the game, but instead got 1/7th the game. A7 is $1 and has way more value and playability. I'm about 99% complete with A7 and still find it more fun than the first 1% of NFS. Pricing on these two should be reversed. Asphalt 7 has multiple modes of play: career/story, free play, and multiplayer. A7 has better cars, lots of upgrades, good progression, more control options, more camera views, and better unique characteristics of cars. A7 has tons of tracks you have access to the whole game and are wildly different in scenery and in difficulty. Need for Speed has different tracks but they all look the same and have roughly the same skill level needed. If you want a pure driving/racing game, go with Asphalt 7. Stay away from this one. It is way over-hyped and a tremendous waste of money.
