Solid Beginner's Set for Letting

Great Beginner set for anyone learning basic drawing or letting with pen and ink. Decent starting nibs for lettering, but not so much for drawing or sketching. One thing that helped me was learning how to prime the nibs (see Youtube videos on setting up your nibs and sizing) and what each mark looked like first. One of the Top 5 most recommended india inks, I agree. The ink doesn't bleed through 40 lbs. mixed media paper and dries clean and even. Good ink for washes, too. Quill is super basic but sturdy enough for the job. The nibs are very flexible which isn't necessarily a good thing for last. Nibs are pretty easy to clean.

User recommendations:
- For calligraphy beginners, it takes time to get used to using the dip pen. I've found C3 nib to be the nicest one to start out with when first learning calligraphy. It takes a while to get a feel of how far in to dip the pen in the bottle and how to reduce blotting on your paper.
- Use a legal pad or notebook to practice strokes and become familiar with this pen.

Suggested Improvements:
- I wish the instructions were more clear about how far in to dip the pens. I had to research the anatomy of this pen to figure out what the different parts are and how deep I should dip the pen in the ink bottle.
- Since cleaning the ink off the nib is an important part of caring for pens, I wish you could easily take apart and put together the nibs for cleaning purposes.

Love this product. A little scratchy when writing - when making long strokes, if pressed to hard the prongs on the nib spread apart making for an ugly stroke and sound which also scratches the paper. If careful, the pen is nice to hold (though plastic) and easy enough to learn how to use if you haven't used a dip pen before. A quick dip to the crook of the nib is all you need. Have an extra scrap paper nearby to scribble so you don't write with excess ink and have beautiful lines. It does not work well at certain angles; thick to skinny lines in writing is not seamless.

I purchased this set for my daughter for her art class. This was her first experience with calligraphy and she loved the set! It was easy to use and she had no problems with the ink or nibs. She was able to successfully learn the basics of calligraphy using this product. She said she would highly recommend it, especially for beginners. The other plus is that when she is ready to advance her skills, the company offers other nibs (tips) that can be purchased for a very reasonable price. This allows her to add to her set without having to purchase a whole new one.

I just started getting into calligraphy and was pointed towards this ink numerous times. So far, I have enjoyed using it. The ink is a nice, dark black color that flows easily on my calligraphy paper. Sometimes, the ink will dry on the inside of the cap making it a little difficult to open, but I suspect this happens with most ink bottles. Overall, a good product, but to be fair, I have never used any other ink, so I cannot say how it stands up to other brands.

Love writing in my cookbook with this... I dont use it often so the dip pen is perfect for my needs.. I always hated when the cartridges would dry up before i even used 1/4 of it!

I would like to add that it does have sharp nibs.. So it can scratch the paper.. But i found if you angle it just so, its not a problem..
It didnt seam to splatter for me...
And several dips are needed to complete a sentence, but i assumed as much being that it IS a dip pen... Its not ment to hold a lot of liquid..
Great for beginners and occasional use!!!

Yeah, using dip pens as part of my new calligraphy hobby has involved a learning curve. It's a trick to keep the right amount of ink in the nib as you are writing! After trying a couple brands, I find I like Speedball the best. These nibs give me the crispest, clearest thin strokes. And the ink is really black as outer space. Careful you don't spill it! And get some pen cleaner for your nibs.
