Product Description

Color: Gold

This transfer composition gold leaf closely resembles pure gold and is a new innovation in composition leaf. It is composition leaf that is bonded with wax paper and when applied to an area with adhesive only the leaf touching the adhesive pulls free of the wax paper. Excess leaf remains attached to the wax paper to be used again. This feature greatly reduces waste commonly associated with the leafing process. Designed to work with flat surfaces. Pack contains 18 sheets size 5-1/2-inch by 5-1/2-inch.

Color: Gold
This composition (not real gold) leaf is designed for FLAT surfaces and is easier to apply to such areas since each leaf comes conveniently adhered with its own wax paper backing. All you have to do is to lay it face down on the flat surface you want to gild (after you've applied the proper leaf adhesive on the area that you are gilding), then gently rub it gently to make sure it adheres properly, let it set for a few minutes, then lift the wax paper backing off. If there are any spots missed, simply brush adhesive on these areas and apply the gold leaf in same manner. Much easier than the loose leaf variety and less waste -- as long as you're applying it to predominantly flat and smooth areas only (like a table top for example). Just make sure you buy the leaf size (adhesive) along with it. Also make sure to seal it afterwards (a sealer is also available) so it does not tarnish (imitation gold leaf will tarnish quickly if not sealed). A thin coat of shellac varnish will also work as a sealer.

Although it won't replace or match genuine gold leaf in brilliance, luster and longevity, this product can be used for interior projects that require the "look" of metallic gold at a fraction of the price. It is also infinitely easier to handle and apply than genuine gold leaf and thus can be tailored for children's projects (supervised, of course).

Let me start by saying:
1. I'm a FIRST-TIME gold leaf applier.
2. I'm not very DIY-crafty.
3. I'm not very patient.

In order for me to try this, it needed to be fairly foolproof, or I knew I'd dropkick it out the window. Reading Amazon reviews didnt exactly fill me with confidence, so I read a bunch of crafty DIY blogs and hoped for the best.

How did it turn out? Well....it wasn't the best of times, it wasn't the worst of times. If we're being honest, it was kind of a pain in the ass, and I made a ton of mistakes, although the end result was more or less okay. Frankly, I would have pulled my hair out, but I really didn't have any free hands, since this stuff is so fiddly, and takes bomb-squad levels of concentration.

Here are some of my observations:
a) What's the "simple" part of this leaf? Well, each sheet comes on a square of waxpaper. You grasp the waxpaper, flip it over, and then kind of press the gold leaf on your surface. I guess the waxpaper is a groundbreaking innovation in the world of gold leaf.....

b) I knew the gold leaf was unbelievably thin, and would show every imperfection in the underlying surface, so I was worried about whether brushstrokes in the Speedball adhesive would show through. Turns out I didnt need to worry that much. The adhesive is quite thin (though it does get frothy quite easily) so as long as you apply it carefully, you won't see streaks.

c) You know how everyone says it'll make a mess, but you have no idea how much of a mess? Well, I'm still finding gold flakes all over the house weeks later. You have to burnish it down, so anything that doesnt come in contact with the adhesive just crumbles and flies away.

Used with 1 shot gilders size and had fantastic results. First application was on a gas tank that was part of a 2015 Indian Chief Vintage that was painted for bike week!

This leafing was very pretty, but you have to have the adhesive base and the external sealer in order to get it to work. It is hard to use on a large area. Doing an entire picture frame and making it look good would be next to impossible.

The leafs work great and are easy to handle with the right adhesive and gloves. Make sure to practice a bit before going on the surface, you'd like to finish. They are cheap enough to practice on something, that you can later give away as a present, LOL :-)

I've never worked with gold leaf before but had seen a video on how to use this one that comes on a transfer paper - I could see how much more difficult handling gold leaf would be without the transfer paper. I managed to get a large antique mirror frame covered - but I probably could have used some proper lessons prior to starting - amazing quality and luster. If it is your first time working with gold leaf - you might want to start off with a small project with little to no decorative molding - I had a lot of decorative molding - which caused me to probably use far more gold leaf than would have been necessary if I had been more proficient - that is not the products fault, but my own. Too - this company's adhesive - a little goes a long way - I managed to cover my large mirror quite a few times - but the sealer - I could have used a much larger bottle of. Both the adhesive and sealer are great products as well as the gold leaf.

Did not look as good as I was hoping. Came slightly damaged, wish I had known to get a burnisher too - wish amazon had recommended it in my "Others who bought this also bought" section. Also didn't know that I'd have to seal it so it wouldn't get so easily scratched with just about anything.
