What's in the box
From the manufacturer
A Century of Fine Pen Making
Speedball's proud heritage for pen-making began in 1899, when the C. Howard Hunt Pen Company began manufacturing and distributing steel pens. Nearly two decades later, in 1913, Hunt sought to improve upon the functionality of the lettering tools of the day and joined forces with master letterers Ross F. George and William H. Gordon in 1913 to contrive and perfect a nib with a reservoir. It was nicknamed “Speedball” because of the efficiency of the pen, which cut working time in half.
Since that time, the Speedball name has become synonymous with high-quality pen nibs. In addition, Speedball now proudly manufactures a suite of complementary products. From pen holders to dip inks & cleaners to calligraphy markers and fountain pens, Speedball offers the broadest range of supplies designed specifically for your drawing & lettering works.
Whether you prefer a broad edge nib or are a pointed pen enthusiast, Speedball manufactures a nib that is precisely-crafted to suit your needs. Our commitment to quality is evident in every nib that is created in our plant in North Carolina. Utilizing the same historically proven processes specifically catered to each individual nib’s design, Speedball takes painstaking measures to ensure that each of our nibs meets even the most discerning standards. In addition to the highly-trained team that is responsible for making your Speedball nib, we have a dedicated member of our Speedball family that hand-inspects all nibs, one by one, that passes through production. That way, our valued artists never have to worry about their writing experience ahead when using a trusted Speedball nib.
Hand Crafted in the United States from the Finest Steel Since 1899

A-SeriesPatented in 1913 and introduced two years later, the A-Series nib is where it all started for Speedball. Its unique multi-purpose design allows artists to create a variety of strokes with just a flip of the pen. The A-Series is ideal for any Gothic or Monoline lettering style that has lines of uniform width with a squared finish. |
B-SeriesThe B-Series nib made its debut in the 2nd edition of The Speedball Textbook in 1916. Like the A-Series, the B-Series has a bent end to form a “shoe” that can easily produce a uniform width line. Unlike its counterpart, the Speedball B-Series nib has a rounded finish that makes it ideal for creating sans serif letters without thick and thin lines. The B-Series is perfect for creating a variety of monoline lettering, drawn letters (e.g. Versals) and “built-up” letters, such as the Double Stroke Poster Roman. |
C-SeriesThe third addition to the Speedball series of pen nibs, the C-Series, was introduced in 1918 in the 4th This series features a traditional broad edge nib with a great degree of flexibility. Our most popular of the three broad edge offerings, the C-Series nib is meant to be held at a constant angle throughout the creation of any traditional calligraphic alphabet (with minor variations needed, depending upon the lettering style). This consistent angle gives the lettering artist the desired thick and thin strokes usually associated with broad edge calligraphy, such as Roman, Carolingian, Uncial, Italic, Gothicized Italic, Blackletter or Neuland.edition of The Speedball Textbook. |
Pointed PensFlexible Pen Points are offered in a range of widths and varying degrees of stiffness to provide artists with the maximum amount of control. Speedball's Pointed and Crow Quill nibs are ideal for drawing, sketching, lettering and cross-hatching. |

I can say I'll be looking forward to testing out Speedball's other lines of nibs and continuing on my art journey with this set. It's perfect in every way and I'm so happy I decided to get these a shot after the horrible experience I had with Walmarts.

P.S. Always rinse out the nibs after using!

The nib holds the ink through either magic or science (I think magic, but have no proof), and holds quite a bit. You have a amazing amount of control over the lines and the results look inpressive. Would definitely recommend.
it's not replacing the pens or brushes, but definitely adds another creative option. There's quite a few videos on youtube which give advice - if you're not sure, then I recommend watching them
I'm glad I did.
First off the penholders are rough cheap plastic, badly finished and the smaller one wouldn't take the delicate nibs it was supposed to without a lot of force. Secondly the information provided wasn't useful and would not have helped a beginner. Thirdly the quality of the nibs was poor, two were distorted and the 102 had a rough point making 3 of the 6 unusable.
Speedball used to be a go to for graphics, are not cheap and this poor quality set appalled me. (I'd also bought a Deleter trial pen set that was far better and cheaper. ) I am glad I hadn't got a pricey box of 102 nibs as Speedballs quality and quality control seems to now be poor.
This seems suspiciously like to a Chinese set one can pick up for a few pounds and wasn't what I expected. So this is not a brand or set I can recommend.
That said all the nibs are pretty good and the holders are excellently weighted.
For very detailed stuff, with a lot of straight lines, this is pretty good. But without a Japanese nib soft mapper, curves aren't too easy. There's a good mix of flexible and non-flexible/elastic and non-elastic though
Worth the money but it might not be the set if you're really wanting a drawing set. I see they have a cartoonist set and the nibs there look much better.
My conclusion. Well I got ink on fingers, not a lot, but a bit, well that's fine, in fact I felt quite the artist, I'mmm Inking a creation (scribbling\doodling) It was a hell of a lot of fun, its just super black when your pen nib to page, I't feels so morish, you find yourself crosshatching drawing little doodle, NOTE the sketching nibs don't write well at all, but sketch they do, I found 2 nibs really scratchy, but they had the own kinda effect. I love two of the nibs super fine, I could get a wide to thin line, eg from a micron 0.8 to 0.2 in one little stroke, and even thicker. I also found to my total joy, they leave a texture, its very very slightly embossed, given a tiny bit of texture. Using with markers, I used a promarkers with it. and it smudges the marker so not marker proof. However I didn't leave the ink overnight. If you wanna try, do I will be using it a lot more then I'll get better, then I'll upgrade. One last thing, as I flip through my sketchbook and come across that dip pen test page, it looks more interesting, even a doodle, scribble or scratch. Ink I conclude is fun. I'm popping off now to look for colored inks, oh yeahh!
Some advice: not all types of paper are good for every tip.
Overall, satisfied with purchase.
