We bought our first vest from a retail store and are back for a vest for another child. The size (M or L) isn't given on the tag, so I just looked up the sizing. Thought I'd post it for anyone else confused by the sizing:
M is 33-45 pounds, 22" chest
L is 45-80 pounds, 24" chest

Incidentally, the medium says 2-4 years. It fits both my 2-year-old boy (about 30 pounds) and my tall, slim 4-year-old girl (38 pounds)

Before I write my review, I just want to say -- This is not a life saving device. If you get pulled over by the DEP, Army Corps, Coast Guard, or whoever, this does not count as a child's life jacket. It isn't intended to be one and isn't marketed as one.

That being said...

This is an amazing swimming aid. A standard, USCG approved life jacket is very bulky, incredibly buoyant, and is designed to flip a child over to her back. While this is ideal for accidents (like falling off of a boat), or a child who has no experience in the water, it is absolutely lousy for learning even the basics of swimming.

This jacket is very thin and slightly better than neutrally buoyant. Essentially, it allows a child to control herself in the water and requires her to actively "participate" -- it requires minimal amount of treading to keep stabilized but at the same time, allows a child to swim on belly or back. Of course, when a toddler is in water, she'll need constant supervision and be in arm's reach the entire time.

If you do any boating, you'll still need a regular USCG approved life jacket (like Stearns Childs Classic Boating Vest ) for when the boat is moving. When the boat is stopped and you want supervised play in the water, the Speedo jacket is great.

Once a child is very comfortable in the water and is able to move on to the next step, a back float like this (B0002HRAZ4 ) works very well.

To summarize... Think of the Speedo jacket as a swimming aid, like arm floats, noodles, or a foam board, that gives a bit more safety and helps encourage the basics of swimming. It's not a life saving device and isn't intended to be one.

I bought this in size large for my 7 1/2 year old grandson (he weighs about 45 pounds) and it fit him well. He used it this past summer at the pool and during our week long vacation in August in the Outer Banks. He seemed to like wearing it; he insisted on putting it on whenever he went to the beach. It's not a life saving device; it just gives kids a little extra buoyancy to help them float or swim. I would recommend this swim vest.

As a former lifeguard and swim instructor, I recommend this life jacket. Very safe and comfortable. It allows the child to learn to swim and protects from drowning. However, it is much smaller than the size specifications led on. I would not put this on a child over 5. The crotch strap isn't long enough.

In Canada, a vest that prevents a child or adult from sinking is called a PFD (personal flotation device). If the item isn't a PFD, you don't use it as a life saving aid. We purchased this vest for our 2 year old grand-daughter 2 years ago, another one for our 2 year old grandson last year; it was quite clear to us that it was designed to ASSIST with floating, and I'm pretty sure that this was quite clear on the packaging. I also think that it said not to leave the child unattended.
We think that this swim vest is a great product (and I was a lifeguard and swimming instructor in my youth).

I purchased in 3/2015. The old reviews are WRONG!!!! If I could attach a picture of proof I would. This vest is very very small. The tag says L 40-60 pounds yet our smaller built 5 year old can hardly wear it. I doubt he will even fit in it the whole summer. The reviews I read said a large would be 50-90 pounds so I am very disappointed. They need to post the size details in the description.

I received this in the mail today and it is exactly as expected. Though we have not used it yet, I expect it to serve the purpose of a swim aid in the pool. It is definitely not a life saving vest as many reviews state. I purchased this for my 5 y.o. daughter. She is approximately 42 pounds, 40 in tall, and wears a 5T in most clothing. I would say she is an average build; not too skinny, not chubby. She runs in about the 50th percentile for her height/weight. The medium I ordered fit her perfectly. I think she will only get one season out of it, however, I could have used this a year ago and gotten two years out of it. Many review said the medium was too small, but it fit perfect on her.

Got this for my 35lb 4 year old son to help him transition from water wings to swimming on his own.

This is fantastic! Perfect for bridging the gap to help your child learn to swim on their own.

Water wings are too buoyant, and make it too unnatural for a child to learn a proper swimming stroke. This vest makes the child feel safe and buoyant, but with the range of motion and freedom to actually "swim" .

A few weeks with the vest, and my little guy was swimming on his own! it was the perfect balance between buoyancy and him being able to swim on his own with natural swimming strokes. This is the perfect product to buy to get over that hump to help your little one swim.

Oh, did I mention it has UV protection so it keeps your little one from getting sunburned under the vest?

Go ahead and buy it, you'll have a young swimmer on your hands in no time!

*Used in Southern Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean Sea
