M is 33-45 pounds, 22" chest
L is 45-80 pounds, 24" chest
Incidentally, the medium says 2-4 years. It fits both my 2-year-old boy (about 30 pounds) and my tall, slim 4-year-old girl (38 pounds)
That being said...
This is an amazing swimming aid. A standard, USCG approved life jacket is very bulky, incredibly buoyant, and is designed to flip a child over to her back. While this is ideal for accidents (like falling off of a boat), or a child who has no experience in the water, it is absolutely lousy for learning even the basics of swimming.
This jacket is very thin and slightly better than neutrally buoyant. Essentially, it allows a child to control herself in the water and requires her to actively "participate" -- it requires minimal amount of treading to keep stabilized but at the same time, allows a child to swim on belly or back. Of course, when a toddler is in water, she'll need constant supervision and be in arm's reach the entire time.
If you do any boating, you'll still need a regular USCG approved life jacket (like Stearns Childs Classic Boating Vest ) for when the boat is moving. When the boat is stopped and you want supervised play in the water, the Speedo jacket is great.
Once a child is very comfortable in the water and is able to move on to the next step, a back float like this (B0002HRAZ4 ) works very well.
To summarize... Think of the Speedo jacket as a swimming aid, like arm floats, noodles, or a foam board, that gives a bit more safety and helps encourage the basics of swimming. It's not a life saving device and isn't intended to be one.
We think that this swim vest is a great product (and I was a lifeguard and swimming instructor in my youth).
This is fantastic! Perfect for bridging the gap to help your child learn to swim on their own.
Water wings are too buoyant, and make it too unnatural for a child to learn a proper swimming stroke. This vest makes the child feel safe and buoyant, but with the range of motion and freedom to actually "swim" .
A few weeks with the vest, and my little guy was swimming on his own! it was the perfect balance between buoyancy and him being able to swim on his own with natural swimming strokes. This is the perfect product to buy to get over that hump to help your little one swim.
Oh, did I mention it has UV protection so it keeps your little one from getting sunburned under the vest?
Go ahead and buy it, you'll have a young swimmer on your hands in no time!

This was recommended to us by a friend. I wasn't sure how my then 1 1/2 year old would take to it. But he slipped it right on and loved wearing the life jacket. Read morePublished 4 months ago by Jmr86
Love it for my toddler. Bright pink and adjustable strap between legs. Is not as bulky as some life vests.Published 6 months ago by MeganS
Great vest. Gives some support but also encourages new learners to "work a little" which helps to increase their skills.Published 7 months ago by cdsimo
My grandson learned to swim this summer and this was a big help. A lot better than a life jacket because he doesn't float as high. He was soon ready to swim without it.Published 7 months ago by Karen D. Lowery
This was amazing this summer for my 4 year old who is still learning how to swim.Published 9 months ago by Ann H. Brown
Great for that first summer of transition when kids are learning to swim. My kids used this about 50% of the time. Read morePublished 10 months ago by M.A.
