Our hero is not alone. His long time undeclared love and her brother join his quest as well as a rather arrogant dragon slayer. Each character has their own desires and their own lessons that they have to learn (or fail to learn). Even though it follows a tried and true pattern there are still plenty of twists and red herrings to keep the reader on their toes. I'd like to point out some, but I also don't want to give away any spoilers. I will say that the identity of the main enemy was a large surprise to me.
The pacing on this was good. It was not too fast and it was not too slow. If you need a light read that still has adventure, you'll enjoy this. If you are someone that prefers heavier tales there is still enough happening that this should also still hold your interest. The climax and denouement were very satisfying to me, rather smooth like a mild raspberry wine.
There is one thing that I feel sets this apart from most adventures. The point of the story was not just the main character growing into their role and coming of age. This questioned the nature of reality.

Dartan is in many ways the typical unassuming hero, but he's got his own personality. The rest of the cast is just as enjoyable and fleshed out, which makes for some great interaction with a lot of wit and banter. Easily recommended for all fantasy fans.
Really nice book..

I recommend this to all readers. Only one typo and two clarifications needed. :-)
