Power Metal at its best! If you like Ronnie James Dio, Iron Maiden, Fight, Judas Priest and Halford, then you'll enjoy Tarot!

When you think of the great metal bands to emerge from Finland, it's usually bands like Children of Bodom and Nightwish that come to mind, but it's Tarot that has been carrying the true metal banner in Finland for close to three decades. Tarot, of course, features bassist/vocalist Marco Hietala, who would later join Nightwish.

Originally released in 1986, Spell of Iron was Tarot's debut album. The band had a sound that could only be described as "heavy metal". They were clearly influenced Iron Maiden and the rest of the NWOBHM scene, and had a powerful yet melodic, “fist in the air” heavy metal sound similar to bands like Overdrive and Obsession. Hietala’s vocals are strong, and the guitar work is also impressive. The title track is a great metal anthem, and “Dancing on the Wire” and “Wings of Darkness” are also highlights.

Spell of Iron marks the debut of one of the most consistent bands in Finnish heavy metal history. Tarot straddles the line between heavy and power metal, and has a sound that should appeal to fans of both sounds. If you’re a serious fan and collector of ‘80s metal, Spell of Iron is a must-have album.

Edition Notes: Spell of Iron was reissued in 2006, and features digitally remastered sound, seven bonus live and demo tracks, and expanded liner notes. It’s a really nice reissue overall, and a much needed improvement over the bootlegs that had been circulating.
