However, she has yet to rescue her friend Morton from his being a painting instead of a person. The tweener has not given up so accompanied by the three cats (Harvey, Horatio and Leopold) she diligently seeks clue to liberate Morton. Also joining Olive and her felines is the neighbor's boy Rutherford Dewey as she searches for the McMartin Book of Spells.
The second Books of Elsewhere is a tense thriller in which evil waits in The Shadows to pounce on the innocent. Olive is a great tweener as she holds the haunted mansion story line together with the capable assistance of the three feisty felines. Middle school readers will enjoy accompanying Olive and her retinue as they search for the tome that will free her friend while the malevolent mysterious McMartin brood try to prevent her.
Spellbound is a wonderful book that gives the reader a lot of suspense. It also is very humorous and I sometimes find myself laughing out loud when I read. I give this book a five out of five stars and recommend it to anyone that likes magic and fun.
P.S. This book would be easier to understand if you have read the first book " The Shadows" that is also as good as the first. I can't wait to read the third volume!
The story's heroine is Olive, a young girl who moves into a crumbling Victorian mansion with her parents. There's something weird about her new home -- the former residents, the McMartins, left everything behind, including paintings that are permanently stuck to the walls and three unusual cats...
"Spellbound" is a fine follow up to "The Shadows." It, too, has twists and turns, and it's full of mystery and magic. And author Jacqueline West balances intense scenes with touches of humor throughout. There are some spooky elements, but West knows her audience and delivers age-appropriate material.
"Spellbound" may not have the same charm as its predecessor but is compelling enough to keep a young reader's interest. The pacing is sound and the story enjoyable. And the story is nicely wrapped up at the end, though it's clear a third book is in the works. Young readers will continue to identify with Olive's sense of adventure as she battles her own fears and learns to equally rely on herself and others.
If this was not enough, now she must find a spell book to help her release Morton from Elsewhere. Luckily she has three trusty guardians to help keep her out of trouble (and away from that book), or are they as trustworthy as they appear?
Readers will not spend as much time in Elsewhere in this sequel, but they will have enough of it to make it worth their while. Olive is on the hunt for the spell book, and she is determined to find it with the help of the three guardian cats or not. Her motivation is not a selfish one - it is steeped in 100% concern in helping Morton join the world of the living. But what happens if and when Olive finds that book - and when Olive realizes that nothing really is as it seems.
The strength with this novel lies with its core character - Olive - but also with the minor characters. If you've read the previous novel, you will be pleased to see where West takes the reader.
