In Spellbound, Charlton continues to charm me with his unexpected take on a fantasy world, with glimpses of cultures and politics that make me want to explore beyond the narrative. There may be dragons and demons, but this is no Tolkein-esque adventure through pseudo-Europe.
I give this book only four stars because the narrative itself did not overwhelm me. A few of the plot developments felt contrived and at odds with the overall feel of subverting the conventional Epic Battle of Good and Evil. I finished the book in a single sitting and was fascinated by some of the sub-plots, but the overarching plot of the series is already getting hazy in my memory.
What has remained crisp and vivid are the diverse characters, the well-defined world, and the thoughtful examinations on the nature of identity, disability, and good and evil themselves. I am particularly enamoured of Francesca and the hierophants, and look forward to seeing what happens next in the Six Human Kingdoms.
All in all a good read that promises a wopping final.
