I’m guessing the author wrote this thinking it would mainly be read by fans of his band, “The Black Math Experiment.” He’s probably right, too – but I never heard of the band and bought this book completely on impulse when I came across his entertaining twitter feed.
I didn’t even know the book was about a band. I didn’t even read the complete title of the book! And yet I really liked it. Maybe it’s because I’ve played in plenty of rock bands myself.
As for “The Black Math Experiment,” I checked them out on the internet oracle, and I like them. They’re in-your-face and outrageous in a thought-provoking kind of way, and they have plenty of catchy tunes. Their most popular song was called “You Cannot Kill David Arquette,” but I found quite a few songs I liked better.
If you’ve never been involved in a local music scene, you can still enjoy this book. It’s funny, it’s sad, it’s serious—and it’s a story unfinished. I don’t think we’ve heard the last from Jeff Rouner, and that’s a good thing.

For every rock and roll success story there are a thousand tales of failure, but none are as odd or inspiring as that of Houston's Black Math Experiment. Four years of busting genres, bomb scares, religious protests, toilet paper cannons, adulation, and out and out weirdness made them legends in their own time. Told by singer Jef With One F, a former hypnotist, transvestite, and luchador turned rock star, "The Bible Spelled Backwards Does Not Change the Fact That You Cannot Kill David Arquette and Other Things I learned in The Black Math Experiment" is a hilarious look at life at the bottom of the music industry where those who dream of stardom will try anything to succeed. And at the heart of it all is the story of how a sarcastic hymn to b-movie actor David Arquette made six misfits almost famous. Whether you're a Black Math Experiment fan, or one of the countless millions who've stood shoulder to shoulder in a dive bar cheering on your own local heroes, this is THE book for those who swear that rock will never die.

In 2008, the Houston Press named The Black Math Experiment, The best "unclassifiable band." With this book, Jef with One F has succeeded in writing the best "unclassifiable book." To call this a rock n roll memoir does not begin to encompass all that this book is. I have never been in a band or played an instrument. I am unfamiliar with most of the clubs/people described in the book. I picked it up mainly out of curiosity and the desire to support local Houston artists. What I found was that I literally COULD NOT PUT IT DOWN. This book made me laugh out loud on a number of occasions. It also touched my heart deeply in parts. Its part humor, part memoir, part "how to" instruction manual for fledging artists, and a touching tribute to the deep human connections that one makes throughout this life. I am pushing everyone I know to read this book.

This was a well written and interesting memoir by a talented writer. Don't be put off by the odd title. Jef With One F gives a glimpse into a world outside of my realm, but it was a fun trip to take with him.

Jef has a fantastic voice as a writer. I had not even heard of the Black Math Experiment before I picked up this memoir and I was still enthralled by the whole book. Couldn't put it down. Interesting, funny, clever, irreverent, at times even heartbreaking, this is a story well worth telling, and well told.

From the moment I read that line, I was hooked. I set my expections low when I picked up this book, hell I didn't even buy it for myself but for my wife but I figured I'd read it too. Being from Houston and also being raised in Galena Park I new very well from where Jef with one F came from and could relate to him on I think on a higher level then most. This book is well written and even though I've never been in a band (and after reading this book, I'm sure glad that I never was...) Jef with one F really made you feel like you were part of BME and in this you feel bad when things go wrong and you feel joy when things go there way (which isn't alot).
I would recommend this to anyone who likes a good story and I really enjoyed reading this book...

Entertaining and inspiring. As a musician who's also been at it his whole life and treasures something different, I loved this book. I've always let my freak flag fly but this book makes me want to raise it higher. BME forever!
