Editorial Reviews

Katharine Hepburn hosts this documentary to Spencer Tracy, which takes a look at some of his best films as well as opens a few doors to his personal life. It's well known that Hepburn and Tracy were quite the couple so she has plenty of nice stories to tell about him be them personal or other stuff about his career.

THE SPENCER TRACY LEGACY: A TRIBUTE BY KATHERINE HEPBURN (1988, 87 minutes) is one of my most favorite, cherished documentaries. However, it also a uniquely weird thing: a tribute to our greatest actor in history (Tracy) by one of the most Oscar-awarded people in history (Hepburn).

In fact, Hepburn stands second only to Clint Eastwood in the number of Oscars awarded (she got 4)-- but then she got more Oscars as an actor than Eastwood too! So here is the Grande Dame of American film, all 5'7" of her, at an advanced age reminiscing about Spencer Tracy. Her delivery and hosting us through this documentary-that-isn't-really-a-documentary is perfection. The material, however, is not.

The film is pleasant and wonderful in the sense that one feels as if Hepburn is speaking directly to us. There is no shady or awkward posing, acting or anything. She is simply recalling some important times with Tracy and walks us around MGM Studios a bit. What always impresses me is the sheer number of people in the "biz" who were touched and inspired by Tracy.

Sydney Poitier--in my opinion another of our greatest actors, and a national treasure--Lee Marvin, Angela Lansbury and several fascinating directors such as Stanley Kramer; they're all here. All talking in little "silhouettes" rather than literary "cameos" about how great Tracy was.

And yes, that gets exasperating though never, ever boring. Interlaced here are Tracy's finest moments on film, though in tiny tidbits like the information about Tracy himself. I always get angered that an actor was so private that so many decades after his death everyone pretends there wasn't much of a personal life to speak of!

This is an interesting documentary based on the value of its being a tribute to Spencer Tracy by Katherine Hepburn. It was produced for public television in 1986 and is interesting because of the people involved and is a valuable piece of history. It is also a bit slow moving and drags in parts. Katherine's letter to Spencer at the end drags on way too long! It meant a lot to her though. I'm glad I saw it.

This was very interesting, but it didn't tell that much about his actual life, it focused mainly on his movies. I was more interested in learning something about his life and times.

Not as "tell-all" as I wished. Good overview however
