Tessie is excited about the televised event that Rafe has arranged because it is bringing in real money and she has only a week until the board decides whether to keep the casino open with her as head or shut it down. She has come to love the job with all its headaches. Unfortunately, she discovers that the big VIP event is being used to set up a meeting for mafia families. If word of that gets out, she is sunk! The event clientele and a murder that may be mafia related has brought Ryder back about almost a year of silence.
T. Sue Versteeg and Gemma Holiday always bring a delightful story to their readers.
The campy gay friend is becoming a bit of a cliche as every writer seems to feel they need to throw one in to be "with it," which feels a bit exploitative after you've read dozens of these characters that all seem interchangeable--the stock "gay sidekick." However, I love the combination of wry humor, quirkiness and mystery. And of course there are always those Code Black fashion crises when Tessie and crew drop the less important catastrophes in order to deal with REAL issues--like what to wear when confronting the frenemy from the past who made good by marrying a big spender who just happens to be seventy or eighty years old...the big spender who, the next day, ends up very dead.
Meanwhile, Tessie's got her father's death to contend with, learning how to run a casino which may or may not have mob clients, dealing with an egotistical celebrity chef and his stripper loving producer, rival shark-like casino owners, the super hotness of a teenage crush on one hand and the super hotness of the FBI agent who jilted her on the other, and, oh yeah, figuring out whodunit. Tighten your seatbelts, it's going to be a bumpy ride....
