Tracing a path on her cheek with his lips, he pulled her closer. "I want you, Nyoka."
Her dark eyes reflected his desire. "I want you, too."
Smiling, he asked, "So what are we gonna do about it?"
A mischievous grin brightened her face as her arms tightened around his neck. "Why don't you tell me?"
Their lips met, gently at first, and then she sank her fingers into his hair as their tongues swirled together in a timeless dance of desire. When he pulled away, her eyes were hazy and she seemed unsteady on her feet.
"Are you okay?" he asked, gripping her arms.
"Yeah, I'm fine." She rested both hands on his chest. "I have to make a phone call if we're gonna ... you know."
"No, I don't know, but I'm sure you're gonna tell me."
Her eyes opened wide as if she'd made some kind of mistake.
Anif watched her closely. The woman guarded her privacy as if she had a dangerous secret that would kill her if she shared it. As hard as he tried to slow his roll, he'd lowered his guard and opened himself to her. Nyoka was like a multi-faceted diamond with so many sides, her brilliance stil dazzled him.
"Uh ... I just meant ... "
"It's okay, do what you have to do."
She stared at him while dragging her teeth over her lip."There's some stuff I have to tell you, but it can wait."
"If you say so."
She rubbed the back of her neck and swayed on her feet as her eyes glazed over.
"Ny, are you sure you're okay?" He loosened his hold on her but didn't let her go. "You don't look so good."
Pointing over her shoulder, she said, "I just need to use the bathroom."
Although distracted by the sway of her hips, Anif didn't believe Nyoka was all right. Just now, when she spoke, he caught a faint odor that wasn't there a moment ago. Shrugging, he told himself it was probably his imagination.
In his kitchen, he poured a glass of Port for them. Nyoka didn't drink, but she would take a sip or two from his glass. He left the bottle on the counter and went to sit on the sofa. His pants were still uncomfortably tight, but he didn't want to make assumptions and get undressed. He'd gauge Nyoka's mood when she came back and follow where she led.
Lauren's face floated in front of him and he shook his head, thinking about the emotional energy he'd wasted. While he'd been worried and guilty over starting something with Nyoka, before wrapping things up with Lauren, she and Martin discovered they were attracted to each other. His brother's revelation, yesterday evening in a phone conversation, came as a shock. He'd grunted, then said, "I'm ... if you guys are happy, that's all that matters."
Of course, he didn't tell Martin he was relieved, but he did expect Lauren would have had the decency to tell him. So much for always thinking of her as an innocent.
After hearing their parents were okay, Anif ended the call, but not before reassuring his brother he wasn't sore over Lauren. If she wanted to roll like that, it was fine with him. Only God knew what their parents would think.
He rose and stood by the window. The lights winking below were hypnotic. He wasn't sure how long he stood there before the back of his neck prickled and his skin went hot and then cold.
What was taking Nyoka so long?
He set the glass on the center table and cut through the room. "Nyoka? Nyoka?"

I am becoming a fan of Good short story writers. My reward for completing a project is a quick fiction read before I move on to the next. And JL Campbell fits the bill.
Her stories are always entertaining. Although I’m ready for more, I’m satisfied the story had a reasonable ending and didn’t leave me hanging.
Enjoyed and recommend.
Nyoka has been betrayed before. She has no intention of letting the arrangement between her and Anif go beyond business, and she's certainly not planning to share her secrets. But as it does, life gets in the way.
I really enjoyed this and it was the perfect beach kind of read - steamy romance, some twists and surprises, and a happily for now ending.
The Spice of Life is a story of love and trust, of coping with health issues, and learning to live in the moment. A wonderful book by a talented author that I highly recommend.
Anif and Nyoka were drawn to each other from the moment they met. He had a love overseas and she had secrets she was reluctant to share. As fate would have it, they get past hurdles and learn to trust their hearts and open to love.
