Editorial Reviews

Review

"A solid introduction to a new thriller series." Kirkus Reviews

"This book was a riveting, read, and the onset of a sequel is cause for excitement." Chanticleer Reviews

There is plenty of action and suspense offered and the reader will be on the edge of their seat more than once.
~The Book Junkie

...a mystery that is gritty dealing with spies, terrorists, sex trade that keeps you guessing about who are the good guys and bad guys...I like Lee's character she is tough, does what is necessary and falls apart after the fact. She thinks on her feet.
~readalot

A strong female protagonist, plenty of physical action and lively dialogue kept me turning the pages to discover what would happen next.
~Queen of All She Reads

[R]eally fine entertainment and launch of a new series. . . Authentic and action-packed.

Lee Carruthers is sent to Fez, Morocco to find out what became of Alicia Harmon, a CIA analyst who has gone missing while investigating a potential new source of terrorist funds. So begins "The Spider Catchers," Marilynn Larew's first novel that deals with the battle between the CIA and terrorism.

Carruthers bemoans receiving the new mission so quickly after just returning from Baghdad. However, she heads back into the field without much persuasion. Once in Fez, she meets with a hostile reception. Each answer she finds only leads to more questions as to why Harmon believes an untouchable Islamic politician is funding a new group of terrorists. Carruthers is methodical in the way she follows each lead, always taking the next logical path.

While several characters play only incidental bit roles, Larew works hard to ensure between bombings and stakeouts that Carruthers' important contacts are emphasized. Still, certain characters are sometimes lost in her sea of informants. The plot never falters, even when Alicia Harmon's motivations are completely obscure to both Carruthers and the reader. The world is real with none of the antiseptic frequently found to ease the burden that comes with reading about terrorism.

Readers who love a clandestine novel will be pleased with the way Larew weaves her mystery. She allows Lee Carruthers to gather hints and suspicions, but keeps the overarching web of conspiracy shrouded as she builds the tension. A dash of romance coupled with a healthy splash of righteous anger, and "The Spider Catchers" carries itself quite well. As Carruthers closes in on what Harmon is investigating, the attacks on her become more frequent.

By the time I finished Spider Catchers, I was convinced Ms. Larew had to have been in the CIA. The scenario was too real. Not to sound sexist, but this is the type of book usually written by men with a macho hero. Lee Caruthers is a formidable heroine, and Ms. Larew pulls her off with style, wit, and believability. One review compared the book to early Ludlum. I've read all of Ludlum's early work, but Spider Catchers was more plausible even though the stakes were high. Looking forward to seeing what trouble Lee gets into in book two. Nice work, Ms. Larew.

Lee Carruthers is a female CIA spy. Actually, her job description is as an analyst, the spy part is known by only a few. She's sent to find a missing employee, one who had taken a job she once held in Fez. She'd rather stay in Paris (who wouldn't?). But she follows. And learns the missing woman is probably dead. Which, could very well be her destiny as well.

This is as swash-buckling (Is that the term I want?) as they come. Evil villains, sexy men, and devious plots galore. Definitely a page turner.

When a CIA agent is dispatched to Morocco to track down a missing worker for an international charity who seems to have been asking the wrong questions of the wrong people, things take a turn for the worse. Suspenseful, fast-moving and readable, this first in a series featuring Lee Carruthers is atmospherically rich and feels very authentic. Fans of spy fiction won’t be disappointed.

Marilynn Larew's The Spider Catchers is a compelling novel about danger, intrique, money and human trafficking. CIA Anylist Lee Carruthers is dispatched to Fez, Morocco, to search for a missing anylist, Alice Harmon, who disappeared after she began asking questions about money laundering and terrorism. From the time she arrives in Morocco, Lee feels like she is on the edge of a huge whirlpool of danger. The whirlpool sucks her in a little more each time she finds another clue on the trail of Alice Harmon. Everywhere she looks, every step she takes leads her deeper into the hell of money laundering and human trafficking until the whirlpool of lies and corruption threaten to pull her down and kill her. She is forced to draw on everything she has learned about self defense as she travels the back streets of Fez to the Palace and beyond. Everyone she talks to winds up dead. She survives a bomb attack while she is following two men involved in an attack on a Femme Aid safe house. The more she digs into Alice's disappearance, the more danger she is in until the whirlpool drags her to the bottom. She is kidnapped and held for ransom by Muslim terrorists. This book is a real page turner and may keep you up past bedtime because once you begin reading it you can't put it aside.

This is an exciting thriller with a strong, yet believable female protagonist. The story is well written, tight knit and fast paced. I normally shy away from any new book labeled #1, but I was surprised with one. It may be book one, but it does stand alone and is a well rounded complete story.
Marilynn Larew drew me into a world that I had little experience with. It was a seedy, hostile, run-down and totally enjoyable world; certainly a place I would rather read about than visit.
This story was good enough that I missed part of Monday Night Football just to finish the book.
