"Spider-Man" is a superhero film adaptation of one of Stan Lee's most popular Marvel comics, and it is widely regarded as one of the most successful superhero films ever made. It was also one of the first films to have the highest opening weekend box office. It's no surprise, given that this is a thrilling and entertaining film. To be precise, one of my childhood favorites! This film portrays the origin tale of Peter Parker, aka Spider-Man, played by Tobey Maguire, who has superhuman powers after being bitten by a radioactive spider, allowing him to climb walls, shoot web, and defeat evil villains. But all of that will be put to the test as Parker faces off against Willem Dafoe's portrayal of the Green Goblin, one of the first villains in the Spider-Man world. Despite the fact that Maguire is a bit bland in a number of his films, I respected that he was a wonderful fit for the role of Peter Parker, portraying a bashful youngster with no powers to defeat the bad guy or win the girl. Despite having some of the corniest lines of dialogue in the film, Kirsten Dunst's portrayal as Mary Jane Watson is endearing, and she has wonderful chemistry with her co-star. However, Willem Dafoe as the dangerous Green Goblin appears to be miscast, as he seems more suited to drama than action. Rosemary Harris, James Franco, Cliff Robertson, and J.K. Simmons round out the supporting cast, delivering some memorable performances, particularly Simmons as J. Jonah Jameson, the enraged editor chief of the Daily Bugle, who steals every scene he's in. There are a few corny and ridiculous moments here and there, but it doesn't detract from the film's tremendous drive. Director Sam Raimi flawlessly keeps loyal to the original Spider-Man concept, delivering plenty of exciting action sequences that are both fun to watch and stay true to the plot, with outstanding visual effects and a fantastic music score by Danny Elfman. "Spider-Man" is arguably my third favorite superhero film, after "The Dark Knight" and "The Avengers." I could watch this movie again and over and still have a good time. I was pleasantly surprised by this film, which never fails to entertain. Everyone will undoubtedly find something to appreciate. "Spider-Man" has "a fascinating tale and spectacular action," according to my evaluation.

Sam Raimi’s 2002 film, “Spider-Man,” adapts the Stan Lee/Steve Ditko character for the big screen. The film stars Tobey Maguire as Peter Parker/Spider-Man, Willem Dafoe as Norman Osborn/Green Goblin, Kirsten Dunst as Mary Jane Watson, James Franco as Harry Osborn, Cliff Robertson as Ben Parker, Rosemary Harris as May Parker, J.K. Simmons as J. Jonash Jameson, Bill Nunn as Robbie Bobertson, and Elizabeth Banks as Betty Brant. Raimi retells Spider-Man’s origin, with Peter Parker starting out as an outcast nerdy kid living in a working class neighborhood of Queens with his aunt and uncle. On a field trip, a genetically-modified (rather than radioactive) spider bites him, granting him powers including strength, speed, agility, a danger-sense, and the ability to shoot webs out of his wrists. He initially tries to use this power to make money, but lets a thief escape when the man running an underground wrestling match cheats Peter out of his winnings. The thief kills Peter’s Uncle Ben and so Peter learns the meaning of his uncle’s wisdom: “with great power there must also come great responsibility.” Meanwhile, Norman Osborn, fearful of losing military contracts, tests an experimental enhancement formula on himself, which drives him mad and turns him into the Green Goblin as he seeks revenge against those he perceives as having wronged him. Spider-Man and the Goblin clash, with their personal connection lending emotional weight to the physical fight. While “Blade” (1998) and “X-Men: The Movie” (2000) helped launch the modern superhero movie, Raimi’s bright and colorful “Spider-Man” proved that comic book movies could be faithful to a comic book aesthetic and tone while still being powerful films. He went on to direct both sequels to this film, which also launched an animated series spin-off that aired on MTV. I purchased this DVD because I had worn out my old DVD of the film and it was time to revisit this series.

I loved the Sam Rami Spiderman films, but they came out before Bluray so I never bought it in 1080P.
So when I saw Amazon had a 4K Bluray for under £9 I jumped at the chance to see the film in HDR.
But alas the disk is being a bit economical with the truth. This is a standard 1080p version of the film, not 4K. When I play 4K content my TV happily displays 2160p (4K). But this displays 1080p.
Read the cover again, and you'll see it states mastered from a 4K source. So yeah I assume digital films have been filmed in 4K for years, but it's only now home cinema has caught up. But this Bluray does not contain a 4K copy of the film. Hey come on it states the film is suitable for playing in a PlayStation 3, so I doubt there's anything more than a bog standard Bluray.
It suggests an expanded colour palette, and yes the suit seems brighter like a HDR film. But this isn't 4K as suggested.
Film wise I stand by 4 out of 5 stars, it's still a great move. But as a 4K disk it scores 1 out of 5. If you already have it on Bluray I doubt you'll see anything different. If you don't, pick it up its still a fun ride and the first real film in the now massive current genre of superhero movies.

Unlike a lot of people, I wasn't really blown away by the first Spider-Man film, mainly due to what I feel was a large miscasting of actors. Tobey Maguire just doesn't click for me as Peter Parker/Spider-Man and he lacks chemistry with Kirsten Dunst who I also felt was miscast as Mary Jane. The only stand out was J.K. Simmons as Parker's boss at the Daily Bugle J. Jonah Jameson, who is just outstanding in the role.

This film also hasn't aged very well compared to other movies released at the time. The special effects are very unrealistic, and the design of the Green Goblin suit was atrocious.

If you have never seen a Spider-Man film before, I would personally recommend The Amazing Spider-Man, which is easily the best acted of the movies. But if I were to recommend one of the Sam Rami movies, I suggest you watch Spider-Man 2, which is a vast improvement on the first film.

At first I was a bit worried as the price seemed ridiculously cheap at only £2.70, but I'm really happy to say I had no need to worry. It came brand new in the package, in perfect condition and with both discs. It also came much faster than it said it would, arriving in around 5 days. Amazing price, quality and delivery time.

As for the movie itself, it was excellent. A must watch for any spider man fan. I think it still holds up really well today even though it was made in 2002.

I'm super happy it easily deserves 5 stars.

I like this better than the new version. In particular, the Green Goblin is every bit a mad and scarey as he is in the comics...I don't know what they were thinking with the current rendition of the GB in the ASM2 film, that was so naf. I think even the comic book fans get up themselves too much and believe these films need to take themselves seriously, but, for me, the fun is in the very comic book nature of it. Bring on the bright spangly custumes....note to the makers of the Avengers movie, PLEASE SORT OUT FALCON'S AND HAWKEYES CUSTOME... What is the point of a superhero if they don't have a custom, they just look like SWAT extras...rubbish, put them in their proper outfits!
