Spider-Man and Spider-Man 3 use the previously released Mastered in 4K transfer. Spider-Man 2 still looks great, but is not the Mastered in 4K version, presumably because Sony didn't want to bother to re-do the additional scenes of Spider-Man 2.1 (the extended cut of Spider-Man 2, on every Blu-Ray release of Spider-Man 2, except the Mastered in 4K version).
Disc 4 contains bonuses for all three movies, as well as a retrospective about Spider-Man in film featuring Stan Lee, who speaks highly of all cinematic versions of Spider-Man and the modern era of superhero films. The big feature is the never-before released (on Blu-Ray) Spider-Man 3: The Editor's Cut: an alternate cut of the film with a different score. Much of the film flows the same as before, but there's some scenes rearranged, some new scenes, and some scenes dropped. (If you want a breakdown, get thee to a search engine.) This shouldn't be considered an extended edition, as extended editions usually build on the theatrical cut. This cut is actually a bit shorter than the theatrical version. It's worth a watch to see a different version of the film playing out. Spider-Man 3 is usually considered the black sheep of this trilogy, and this doesn't make it worthy of the previous two, but some do see it as an improvement.
All of the discs have been re-authored from previous versions to include better video transfers and more bonuses.
Disc 1: Spider-Man (2002) and bonus features.
Disc 2: Spider-Man 2 (2004) and Spider-Man 2.1 (extended cut) and bonus features.
Disc 3: Spider-Man 3 (2007) and bonus features
Disc 4: Spider-Man 3: The Editor's Cut (2017) and bonus features for all three films.
The digibook comes with a single Ultraviolet code that should redeem a bundle of all three films and their extended and alternate cuts.
The digibook may not please some as the discs are held in pouches that double as pages. However, the added booklet inside might add value.
If you've been waiting to get these movies on Blu-Ray, this is definitely the set to get. If you already own a previous set, you may or may not want to get this as well or replace it with this one. Spider-Man 3: The Editor's Cut is also available through digital retailers, so if you want to see that, but don't want to buy a new set, there's an option. Mastered in 4K versions of two of the movies aside, this set simply offers more bonus features than previous sets. If you don't want the digibook packaging, but want the discs, you may have to turn to buying a plastic case and creating your own artwork. Good luck.
4 stars because of the digibook as well as Sony not releasing a specific press release about this version to let us know how it'd differ.
If you are a fan of the original Sam Raimi Spiderman films, this is the best set you can get. The blu-ray transfers of the films look fantastic on the screen. And if you haven't watched these films yet, and you're interested in watching them, I definitely recommend you get this set!
As for the packaging, the films come in a digibook. The digibook contains several written pieces about how the films were made. It also contains stills from the film and from behind the scenes. The discs themselves are placed in sleeves. There are a total of 4 discs. They include the theatrical editions of each film, as well as the extended edition (aka 2.1) of Spiderman 2, and the director's cut of Spiderman 3. There are also a ton of additional special features, such as documentaries, interviews, and even music videos.
If you are looking to own this trilogy on home video, this is the set to go with. Highly recommended!
The Spider-Man Trilogy Limited Edition Collection contains the 3 Spider-Man movies in a Blu-ray set that is more like a book. The first 40 pages contain behind the scenes information about each of the three movies, before revealing the discs in separate cardboard sleeves. In my case the sleeves hold the discs well, you would have to shake the "book" for the discs to fall out.
The set includes four Blu-ray discs.
Disc 1: Spider-Man
Disc 2: Spider-Man 2 (also includes Spider-Man 2.1, which is an extended cut).
Disc 3: Spider-Man 3
Disc 4: Bonus Disc (Includes Spider-Man 3 Editor's Cut).
The digital copies are included on a paper slip as one code that is redeemable by Ultraviolet.
The code redeems five movies: Spider-Man, Spider-Man 2, Spider-Man 2.1, Spider-Man 3, and Spider-Man 3 Editor's Cut.
At the time of this post, the digital copy code expires on 12/31/19
