Chee and Leaphorn are in excellent hands

I'm always nervous when another author takes over writing a favorite series, especially one as long-running as Chee and Leaphorn. I had nothing to fear this time. Ms. Hillerman has done a masterful job of extending her father's series. Her writing is well-crafted, and her ear for the dialogue of our favorite characters is true. The plot's echoes of prior adventures has twists and turns that kept me reading straight through until the end without a break.

I especially enjoyed getting to know Bernie Manuelito as a true fully dimensional character in her own right, rather than a supporting character to Chee. The weaving of stories of the old ones into Bernie's everyday life as a modern Navajo woman adds texture and color in subtle but instructive ways. I'm looking forward to hearing more of her adventures.

Let me add that I'm not a professional reviewer. I'm just an avid mystery reader from Albuquerque who really enjoyed this book. I'm so happy the series is in such capable hands.

Five stars for doing what I thought might not be possible

I had read all 18 of Tony Hillerman's novels and was ready to let go of Leaphorn and Chee as a past pleasure. When I heard Anne Hillerman was going to try to pick up where her father left off, I was hopeful but also hesitant. But she has done her father proud. This book is as good as it is because Anne Hillerman is obviously an accomplished and methodical writer. However, and perhaps more importantly, it's also because the same people who were involved in her father's books are contributing here: Herself, her mother, HarperCollins staff, and her father, fully in spirit if not in flesh. Now add Anne's husband Don to these foster parents. The group effort that most every successful book depends on is still in place and running smoothly. This gives me hope that the heartbeat of new books will continue, if not every year then maybe every other. What a pleasure to think that I can continue to be either enjoying the latest book or savoring the thought of a new one on the way.

As for this novel, the shift to a woman's perspective, both in Bernie and in a far greater number of female characters, reminded me of how much I missed Emma, the original Hillerman Navajo woman I always wanted to hear more from. Bernie's coming into her own has met that need for me, and I look forward to watching her life unfold and meeting more female Navajo characters.

Several reviewers have mentioned a difference of pace in this story compared to her father's style. It's true that Anne drives the plot forward in a deliberate way, unlike Tony's more relaxed, even meandering, path to the solution to the crime. Anne's work in this book is more like a tightly written, classic detective novel. I'm pleased with that because I like that type of story. There are some lyrical moments that give the flavor of the landscape, the feel of the weather, but it's true that she does not manage to make the land almost a character in the book. Maybe in time, but if not, that's all right. Her work stands on its own merits without needing to be a clone of her father's to succeed.

I loved Tony Hillerman mysteries. His dauther Anne did not dissapoint!

Tony Hillerman was my favorite mystery writer. When I discovered his daughter, Anne Hillerman had written a book featuring Navajo Tribal cops Jim Chee, Bernadette Manuelito and their mentor, the legendary Lieutenant Joe Leaphorn I couldn't wait to dive into her work. I was curious as to how she would follow in her father's footsteps. In my opinion she made a seamless transition. In the first chapter Bernadette Manuelito who goes by Bernie witnesses the attempted murder of Joe Leaphorn and immediately comes to his aid. She comforts him and promises she will try to find the shooter. By the end of the first chapter I was hooked.

Anne Hillerman makes excellent use of the same resources used by Tony to show an intimate knowledge of the Navajo people, their customs, love of their sacred lands and an appreciation for relics and artifacts found in and around the Navajo Reservation. As a police procedural the novel is a good representation of tools and methodology used by law enforcement.

From Chapter 1 on the search for clues and a reason for the assault escalates toward a powerful conclusion. For me, Spider Woman's Daughter did not disappoint. Kudos to Anne Hillerman for making her first attempt at following Tony Hillerman's legacy a resounding success!

My expectations are high as I look forward to reading the rest of her work.

I was introduced to Tony's work by a Park Ranger at Mesa Verde.20 years ago. I have read many of the books. I have spent a fair amount of time in the Navajo Country locations so have familiarity. As a retired police officer I feel a kinship to Joe, Jim, Bernie, Cowboy and appreciated the various characters in the books. This book had new twists with Leaphorn being shot. The plot was well laid out and described involving the Navajo culture. The locations, Earls' Restaurant, the Crown Point Rug auctions, Window Rock, Ship Rock, Gallup and so many other beautiful areas of the rez was like a trip back. The author is not Tony and she need not be, she has done an excellent job of maintaining and bringing Bernie into the story no doubt for much future play. The Navajo culture may seem foreign to many readers but it is fascinating to know what is allowed by them and try to understand how they live and think. Read the books with an appreciation of the culture and the land. Read this book for its entertaining value!!!!!!!!!!!
