In collaboration with two of the leading IPA brewers in the United States, Sam Calagione of Dogfish Head and Ken Grossman of Sierra Nevada, Spiegelau has created the new standard for IPA beer glassware. Achieved through a series of design and tasting workshops in which hundreds of possible designs were considered, the brewers ultimately and unanimously chose, by secret vote, one glass – ‘number 6’ – from a final lineup of eight custom-made prototypes. Designed to showcase the complex and alluring aromatic profiles of American “hop-forward” IPA beers, preserve a frothy head, enhance taste and mouthfeel, and present a comfortably wide opening for the drinker to savor each beer, Spiegelau’s latest design is the go-to vessel for enjoying IPA. Dogfish Head and Sierra Nevada champion US hop farming. The breweries and donating their portion of the proceeds from this collaboration to benefit advances in hop research.

UPDATE: I ordered a set of 6. Two had the nucleation point and four did not! I see from other sites that both versions are produced and equally priced. I wrote to Amazon and they nicely offered to take them back. Since they all seem to be sold by third parties and serviced by Amazon (prime) I wasn't sure I could do better so I kept them. I got 6 at a very low price (same as 4 from other sellers.) I'm quite satisfied but it seems unclear if one will get glasses with or without the nucleation point and in what mix. Now I can experiment on if it makes a difference. But be aware. Still 5 stars. Fun!
*UPDATE* So after a few months of owning these they are head turners. Friends and coworkers LOVE them and ask where I got them. However, I have come across a problem, rather painful one too. They are VERY thin, and once you get to the lip of the glass it seems to be a little weaker than everywhere else, I had one explode in my hand while I was using a sponge (soft) and hot water (no soap as that leave residue which can skunk your beer) which cut my hand up pretty bad. I have had to be MUCH more gentle cleaning them since than, and while using them is super easy, I slightly fear cleaning them now. Still AMAZING glasses though.. so WARNING, be very careful cleaning the lips!
Overall the recipient loves them and I can't wait to pick up a set for myself as well to add to the beer glassware!
I was a bit hesitant to buy at first due to the price and the "thin" glass. But I had read enough to know these were what I wanted and decided to pickup a pair when they were on sale. I'm glad I did.
First, the thin glass isn't a bad thing. It has purpose. It helps keep the beer cool longer. Runs contrary to intuition, but the science backs it up. But due to the high quality of the glass, it is surprisingly strong. I've tipped one over onto our tile counter top and it just bounced. I was sure it was going to break. But it didn't. So not as weak as it would appear.
Second, the purpose built glass does what it says it will do - improve the overall quality of the IPA beer experience. How? By pumping out the aroma on a constant basis. It does this by using a few "tricks" to keep the CO2 releasing from suspension and in the process, releasing aroma and flavor into the head. This happens throughout the entire glass of beer, start to finish - unless you let it so long that it goes flat.
Third, the narrow opening causes the aroma to be concentrated and when you drink, you get a fuller whiff of the aromas.
We have used these for over 6 months and have not lost one yet. We use the top rack of our dishwasher and don't have any issues. These are fine in the dishwasher - contrary to their recommendation.
Overall, very happy with these. Highly recommend.
