The certainty that your expensive phone is completely trashed when your GPS locator app shows the phone on the freeway, 5 miles from home, 6 miles from where you started this ill fated journey.
The somewhat hopeless attempt to located your surely smashed device, in the dark, during rush hour.
The wave of relief and incredulity when you actually locate your phone, on the shoulder of the freeway, and it is not only fully functional, but largely unscathed... perfectly intact screen, not even a scratch. The case clearly shows abrasions where it must have tumbled end over end, i.e. the corners are scuffed. Other than that... perfect!
So, I went out and bought a lotto ticket, this must be luck. I'd love to attribute the miracle to the amazing case, but really, it's a simple one piece flexible TPU case... I have to give some credit to the gods, or fate, or the pixie dust they sprinkled on it before shipping...
Overall, the case is very nice... smooth, very pleasant touch / feel, I've had a Spigen clear gel case for the past year, it was starting to yellow with age so I gave this one a try. Had it on for about a week before the tumble. Very pleased.. the two tone (well, more two texture) back is a match for the distinctive design elements of the Pixel XL. When I purchased this, I assumed the "carbon fiber" elements would be on the top portion of the phone, no such luck, that top portion is a simple micro groove style texture as opposed to the smooth lower portion. The carbon fiber exists only as a small accent on the bottom of the back, about 1/4" worth.
Anyway, it did it's job so well I'm ordering another one, to recapture that smooth "new" feel I got to enjoy for a week...
My only complaint is the lack of color options. lacking character makes it easy to confuse with other peoples' phones and the black makes it that much more difficult to locate when it's fallen on the floor of the theater or between the cushions on the couch.
This Spigen Rugged Armor case is surprisingly lightweight. I was expecting perhaps a pliable, rubbery liner, as the description noted the corner protection designed into the case, but it appears that refers to some extra room in the corners to absorb a knock or bounce. The material of the case is not fully rigid, rather it has a bit of responsiveness. It does remain on the cell phone securely, yet is a snap to remove if needed.
The description notes that the case is reinforced with fibers - which give lightweight strength. There is a texture to the outside of the case that keeps it in your pocket, makes it unlikely to slide if you knock it, yet is not "sticky" feeling. The rim around the face of the phone is just enough - more than I have experienced in other cases except the front/back snap together Ft Knox version. The texture takes about a week to get used to - but it is not something that I notice now.
Having used this case for not quite three weeks, I would look for this brand again. It is not decorative, which is fine with me. I am very pleased with this purchase.
The Rugged Armor series has been my model of choice. It's not too bulky, feels nice in the hand, and fits the phone precisely. Also, as a case should do, it has protected my phones from the typical bumps and drops.
Being realistic, no case this thin will protect a phone from every drop on to any hard surface. If anything, this type of case provides better grip to lessen the chance of dropping it in the first place.
But I'll admit I've dropped every phone I've had multiple times with one of these cases on to concrete or tile from hand height, and I've never had any damage to the phone. I make it a point to never take a new phone out into the wild before it gets a case.
I also ensure that I apply a tempered glass screen protector every time I get a new phone, and replace said protector if any damage occurs to it. Following this regimen, all my phones have still looked nearly brand new when the time comes to retire them.

First, allow me to give you a bit of context: when choosing a case for my smartphones, I'm always looking for the best combination of design/style, protection, comfort and value for money. As far as I am concerned, additional features like a built-in stand are just 'nice to have'.
I am personally a huge fan of thin-ish covers which offer a satisfying level of protection (including the screen as I dislike screen protectors) without impacting the design of the phone too much, and ideally improve the customer experience (for instance by improving the grip). All the buttons, connectors and the camera (including the flash) should work as well as without the case.
Now you will find below my unbiased views on the SPIGEN 'Rugged Armor' case.
I LIKED
+ good design with discrete Spigen logo
+ the grippy texture to match the glass part of the device on the back
+ great grip
+ acceptable additional bulk
+ excellent level of protection: thick material, raised on the front to protect the screen, all the buttons are protected too
+ precise cut outs (bottom and top of the phone, camera and fingerprint scanner)
+ flash works well with the case
+ easy to both fit in and remove your Pixel XL
I WISHED
- there is nothing wrong with this case... but it'd be good if Spigen offered a range of colour options
CONCLUSION
This rugged but relatively thin case from Spigen offers a brilliant trade off (level of protection vs. additional bulk). It match the Pixel XL Quite Black perfectly. And considering the decent price tag (about £9.99), I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this case to all Pixel XL owners.
This has been my daily driver since I’ve received my phone.
WHO IS IT FOR
I believe that this Spigen case would satisfy all Pixel XL owners who want some piece of mind without compromising the user experience. This case complement the quite black Pixel XL perfectly well.

Over the years it has left a mark on the back of my phone but I'm sure it would wash off. Definitely sticking to Spigen for my future cases

This case does have one problem, however; the cutouts for the camera and the camera's laser focus are very small; no problem in itself as they don't obscure the aperture itself, but combined with the relatively thick material of the case, this means that dust that gets into these holes stays there. This is a particular problem with the laser focus cutout, which can cause the camera's autofocus to be pretty much useless once dust has accumulated in there. This is a small gripe but a very noticeable one if you're the kind of person who likes taking quick photos of things and relies on the autofocus.

This case is NOT recommended, neither are any of the other recent Spigen cases. Sad to say, but true.
