UPDATE! Spigen is now shipping this case with a larger cutout for the lightning port! This is good for those who use 3rd party cables.
Good things about this device:
Slim and looks "cool"
Silver almost looks like the iPhone space gray back so at times people don't even think I have a case on. Good thing I guess.
Volume and Power button are easy to use with the case on.
Camera quality does not suffer from having a case on.
I've dropped this several times on its side and back and the case/phone comes out injury free every time.
Lightning port is easily accessible and does not require any finicking to charge or sync your phone.
Headphone jack. This is easily accessible if you have stock headphones.
Does not protect so much on the face. The lip is very tiny so if you drop it face first, I dunno how good this will protect it from that side.
Not really a con but I wish it had a hole in the back so you can see the Apple symbol.
Headphone jack: Some aftermarket ones will give you a hard time to plug into the jack because the hole is so small.
This is not really a con either but the back will scuff easily if you scratch it on like rocks or cement. I try to lay it down on smooth and clean surfaces when I can.
I found out how to turn on the iPhone field test mode that will display attenna reception in db, and noticed that with this case on, the terrestrial antenna reception at the same location would drop from -82db (no case) to -94db (Slim armor).
So I applied for a refund, and promptly got the RMA. But I hesitated to return it, because the Spigen product box is kind of heavy, and I figure the return postage would be a good percentage of the cost of the product ($17.99 ).
To make a long story short, I'm keeping this case.
After many days of testing and poking around on the web, it occurred to me that the problem of bad reception and bad wifi performance may not have been affected by the case after all.
After I reset the iphone5, it is no longer so super sensitive when the Slim Armor case is put on. It more or less stays at the same level of reception. The wifi problem was solved by buying a new dual band router, and going onto the 5GHz band, away from the surrounding neighbors' 2.4GHz routers.
But I'll say this: a good router makes a lot of difference. I saw very different performance from different routers when I use the iNetQCheck app which displays QoS problems. I wanted to use VoIP apps for long conference calls, rather than burn up my anytime minutes. A cheap router is not up to the task and initially led me to erroneously suspect the case of blocking wifi reception.Read more ›
I've always liked minimalistic cases and normally prefer the Slim Fit or Barely There cases that hold the sides but leave the top and bottom edges open, but this case is almost as minimal as those, AND also protects the top and bottom edges. It's now my favorite case.
There are only two drawbacks, both rather minor...
1) The access holes to the lightning and headphone ports are on the small side and work best with the smaller accessories (original apple), however they do allow for use of the larger generic cables, albeit a little snug. I do have the newer, redesigned case with the larger port cut-outs, but the fit is still snug for my generic cables.
2) Access to the ringer/vibrate switch is tough. This port is deeply recessed and makes getting to the switch difficult, however, with only a little effort, it works for me... large-fingered users may not be so lucky.
4 Stars... I like it and I think it is priced appropriately.
