This is not like previous thin fit cases. This has a hard back with soft rubber edges. More like a hybrid case. Don’t see this soft rubber lasting too long. I’ll keep my fingers crossed.

Great comfortable minimalist case

The case is nice, I’ve used Spigen cases on my last few iPhones. My favorites are the thin fit, as having such a large phone, anything extra really adds up. The case is a nice matte finish, with square edges, making it easy to hold. All the buttons are covered, with only the silence switch still uncovered. The edges are a softer rubber which is comfortable, and seem like they would absorb a drop fairly well. I would recommend this case to anyone looking for a more minimalist style case that still offers decent protection.

Perfect fit, Spigen is great I had one on my last phone and this is just as good. I tried another brand case before this one and it was a poor fit with bezels visible. This covers the front bezel fully, has a good lip on the front and back, very thin overall and has built in button covers. It’s a winner!

I've had Spigen cases on my last 5 phones. I love them because they are thin fit and just enough protection to them that I feel like my phone is safe. (and it makes iPhones much less slippery to grasp!)

This is the same, but yet.. I have some qualms:

1) It feels a little cheaper, and it is a full-around case that covers the bottom and top instead of just the corners.
2) They covered up the buttons! I always LOVED that they did a cutout for the buttons as I hate button coverings. They missed big time with adding that - there is a cutout for the switch, the buttons should be. that way too.
3) Minor niggle here but only coming in black stinks. I bought a blue phone and it would have been nice to have a blue case.

Still overall decent case, just isn't. perfect anymore, and now I have to go look for perfection once more. And take an X-acto knife to those stupid button covers....

I happily ordered this case after finally upgrading to the 12 pro max from the 7 plus, and I was not disappointed.
I can see why other people might be mad because the sides/lips do completely wrap around the phone, but with the new squared design of the iPhone 12... what did you really expect?
The case itself is still pretty thin and still provides a much better grip on the phone.
My only complaint is that I wish Spigen made this specific case in more colors, like perhaps a deep blue to match the blue of the phone, instead of ONLY black.

Does not live up to the Thin Fit heritage

I have had Spigen Thin Fit cases for my last 5 iPhones. Previous Thin Fits were high quality, fit great and were a great value, but the one for the 12 Pro Max strayed from the Thin Fit heritage.

This is first Thin Fit case that I’ve had that is not 100% rigid material. The back is rigid, but the front is an integrated rubber-like material. The case snaps on well, but the rubber-like material at the top by the sensors and the bottom by the speakers are really rubbery and I get the sense they may not sit flush over time.

Two other characteristics stray from previous Thin Fits. First, the edges extend much higher than previous Thin Fits. Previous versions had slight edges so you could still lay it on the table, but this version’s edges are noticeably larger. Second, this is the first Thin Fit where the top and bottom of the phone are fully enclosed. Previous versions protected the corners, but had cutouts on the top and bottom so you could see the stainless steel or aluminum from your phone.

I’ve always liked Spigen for quality products at great prices ($10–$20), but I moved on to an Apple silicone case ($50) which is much more in line with what I thought this Thin Fit would be.

I hope future variants will be more aligned with the Thin Fit heritage; willing to try again because they’ve typically been great cases.

The good and what would make it better

What you are about to read is the story of why I chose this case for my new iPhone 12 Pro Max, which only started shipping a couple of weeks ago. When that happens there are usually a small number of cases at first to choose from the major brands and I usually buy a couple of them to give my new toy some protection until I actually get the device into my hands and I can decide which case I like best.

These days we all know that phones are not cheap, mine cost me over 1200 bucks. So protecting it is a big deal to me and there are a few other things that are important to me, like how slip resistant is the case, how do the buttons feel and maybe most important, how much weight and size does it tack on to a phone that is already the largest and heaviest Apple has ever made.

That last one is something to give serious thought to, I mean the manufactures these days literally spend billions on engineering a phone that is as slim and lightweight as possible, not to mention as beautiful as it could get and then what do we as customers do – we go out and buy a thick heavy and usually unattractive thing to put it in to. Or, maybe just as bad, we buy some thin piece of junk that does nothing to protect our beautiful gadget. Okay I do all of the above sometimes, trying several styles until I find the one that is just right, and that decision only comes from living with it in real life use for a while.

I want to make a point that I actually buy all of those cases with my own money. That’s kind of rare, there are few products that are given away free more than phone cases. And it’s not uncommon to see reviews that show empty cases from people who don’t even own the phone that it’s supposed to be for.

That all brings me to this one. Spigen is a very trusted name that makes some of the better cases but still manages to make them affordable. This one was on sale for only about twelve bucks and it’s the one I chose to try out as my minimalistic option. I want to try as much as possible to add as little extra size and weight to this phone. I already have a clear TPU one and a lightweight real leather one in contention, both offer more protection than the Spigen but those very few millimeters and few extra grams are very close to being a dealbreaker.

I am very careful with my phones and while I have dropped every phone I’ve owned at least once, it was usually something like knocking it off the couch to the floor. I’ve never dented a phone or cracked a screen. So I’m not overly worried that this one is too thin, I’ve seen thinner. This case has raised lips where it should.

PROS AND CONS

Okay let’s move on to the reality check where we pick apart the good and not so good features of this case. I have very mixed feeling about this case and I’ll cut right to the chase – I will probably not keep it on my phone for long, It’s not my favorite case. In no particular order here are the reasons why.

1. I like that it is lightweight without being paper thin as some cases are. The actual weight is one ounce, which doesn’t sound like a lot but because the sides are thicker than the back it does make the phone feel bulkier. I have an ESR leather hybrid case that is 1.2 ounces that feels like a brick in comparison, it is the one shown for comparison in my photos.

2. Apple made a huge decision to break away from the rounded edges and go back to the severely squared off edges on their 2020 lineup. For some odd reason this case ignores that with edge bumpers that are a cross between square and rounded. It feels odd and uncomfortable and tends to slip out of my fingers too easily.

3. The materials themselves are a hybrid of a matte TPU back with a rubber bumper edge. Unfortunately it feels much more slippery than the leather case mentioned above.

4. The controversial button covers are also a hybrid, they are actually only partial covers with exposed edges. I wonder why bother, they don’t offer any protection against dust and moisture entering the exposed edges and do nothing but hamper the superb feeling of the phone’s redesigned buttons. No one has said this yet but you can slice the covers off with a sharp razor blade.

5. On the other hand the feel of pushing the buttons is surprisingly good.

6. Kudos for designing a large opening around the lightning port, so many others make that opening too small to accommodate off brand cables.

7. The raised lip around the cameras offers questionable protection but to be fair I don’t know what you could do protect the 12 Pro Max’s massive lens array.

8. For a thin lightweight case the lip surrounding the front screen is well designed.

9. Unlike my other case this one does not have a flocked lining to protect the phone from getting scratched up by trapped dust particles. That surprises me.

SUMMARY

This is a case I want to like but I feel like it’s almost there but not quite. I think it has more than minimal protection against dings and scratches and enough basic drop protection for slight accidents. The button action feels natural and those covers don’t bother me. What I don’t like is the choice of what feels like rubber edges and the matte plastic back, it feels unnatural in my hand and more slippery than it should. I think I might bite the bullet this time and get one of the leather cases sold by the phone manufacturer, somehow it seems like a twelve-hundred dollar phone deserves it.

If your preference is the most minimalist case possible though this is my choice for one that ticks many of the boxes and comes from a reputable company that will stand behind it.

It’s an OK case, good quality too. The problem is though that it’s not like previous ThinFit cases. It is NOT thin. It’s big, adds like 3-4mm on each side of the phone and makes it feel awkwardly bulky
