Why can they be called "doctors"?

Although primarily based on the chiropractic trade in Canada, the information in this book is equally applicable to chiropractic practices anywhere. I have always suspected, based on the experiences of others submitting themselves to chiropractors' methods of "treatment", that what the chiropractors call "medicine" can range from benign but worthless hokum to the downright dangerous and potentially deadly. Others have told me that chiropractic is something which you must believe in for it to be effective in reducing pain. This is the perfect description of the placebo effect. That is to say, for example, if you truly believe that waving a chicken feather over a painful area of your body will reduce your pain, you may indeed experience some relief as a result. Anyone considering submitting themselves to the ministrations of a chiropractor should read this book first.

Smoke and Mirrors

Finally a book that takes you through the smoke and mirrors of a false profession. The book is a good intellectual read for those that want to know the truth about chiropractic dogma and unsubstantiated, if not completely irrefutable, theories. The fact that most chiropractors hold to more of a religious belief system on how the human body works versus embracing evidenced-based care susbstantiates the fact that their profession should be dissolved. Remember, evidenced-based spinal manipulative therapy for musculoskeletal conditions does have some emperical evidence but the chiropratic theory that adjusting the spine to resolve nerve interference which thus prevents pathogensis for such conditions such as ear infections, asthma, diabetes, and bed wetting is nonsense and completely unsubstantiated. Also, there are many specialized physical therapists and some orthopedic physicians that perform spinal manipulative therapy for the sole purspose of treating musculoskeletal conditions but not all physicians and therapists do this type of work as their professions have a much wider scope of total practice. The chiropractic establishment argues that they are trying to move to a more evidenced-based approach to care but the problem is that this part of the medical arena is already occupied by the physical therapist and the other problem is that most chiropractors have not and continue not to embrace a scientific approach to treatment. This is a disservice to their patients and the tax and insurance industries that pay their claims.

A talk about legitimized pseudo-science

Chiropractors: The only medical professionals who get paid to not-heal their clients, who get taught in school to create long-term relationships with clients instead of healing them, and whose profession is based on spiritual pseudo-science. This book follows the creation of this profession based on deliberate not-healing through its birth up to the modern age, and then addresses the dangers of the unnecessary procedures that chiropractors are taught to make people “feel better” by allowing universal intelligence to flow through the body. (Seriously, look it up) The book addresses that extensive scientific review has found chiropractic “bone setting” to have similar outcomes as doing nothing, except in the case of lower back pain where the chiropractor can make the client “feel better”. But once again, only a bad chiropractor would heal (and lose) his money source. This book is a must read if you’re thinking about chiropractic work or if you have a family member that is being soothed (not healed) by a chiropractor.

The book suggests that a person with chronic lower back pain should talk to their doctor to see if Chiropractic work is right for them. The rotational lumbar-spine procedure that chiropractors use (which physical therapists, doctors of osteopathy, and physiatrists also can use if they call it a “manipulation” instead of an “adjustment”) is helpful and evidence based in the reduction of lower back pain, and this is the reason that Chiropractors exist in a legitimate sense. Chiropractors can give you this procedure, quickly, for cash, without accessing a medical system or insurance. Just don’t expect to be healed, and know that a few people die each year from procedures like this.

An excellent exposure of chiropractic

Spin Doctors is the best written, researched and documented examination of the chiropractic industry I have read. The authors take an exhaustive and balanced look at chiropractic history, beliefs and practices and, as journalists, present their findings in a very readable and cohesive book. Even though they focus on their native Canada and the book was published in 2002 nearly everything they report applies equally to the United States and to the present. It's dismaying, yet not surprising to see the negative reviews of this book. I can only assume that most of them were written by chiropractors and their disciples because they don't like the truth about their cult being exposed. I wonder how many even bothered to read this book. Anyone at all interested in chiropractic should read this book including doctors, nurses, legislators, insurance and health plan personnel and current and prospective victims, I mean patients. Here are a few excerpts from the book's conclusion:

“There is no place for unscientific health care in the twenty-first century. Chiropractors should not be allowed to call themselves doctors.”
“We have to trust legislators to ensure that a government-approved profession that can bestow the title “doctor” is a valid science-based health care system. Chiropractic is not.”
“When anyone, anywhere, at any time has made the effort to penetrate the facade, what they find isn't a solid, coherent foundation, but a jumble of lies, misconceptions, and delusion.”

You owe it to yourself to read this book!

IT's a surprise. I am treated by an old-fashioned chiropractor - 25 or 45 minute appointments, muscle release and acupressure all by hand, trigger points and no rushing. Then I had the mis-fortune to go to a 'new style' chiropractor. What a money rip-off! Know more than any medical dr. instead of working beside them. My older chiropractor was even allowed to come into the hospital to treat me after back surgery. This new guy, I would NOT allow him to treat what the toilet bowl catches. What happened to this 'used-to-be-medical-alternative-for many? GREED AND MONEY!
