Editorial Reviews

2009 self-titled debut album from former Distillers front woman Brody Dalle. Also including bandmate Tony Bevilacqua and ex-Ret Hot Chilli Peppers and Queens of the Stone Age members Jack Irons and Alain Johannes, this is a mature, experienced Punk Rock record with strong melodies and Pop flourishes, which is reminescent of bands such as Siouxsie and the Banshees, Eagles of Death Metal and the Pixies. Includes the single 'Baptized By Fire'.

As an ardent fan of Ms. Brody and of The Distillers, I, among others waited a while for this release, and I can't say I was disappointed. At its hardest (A Prescription For Mankind, A Spectral Suspension), it echoed the grunge-punk that was 'Coral Fang'. Spinnerette's catchiest, most accessible pieces (Ghetto Love, Sex Bomb) are well-written and excecuted pop-songs remniscent of The Runaways; 'Baptized By Fire' is haunting, telling of Brody's musical transition from punk to rock? The album's textured and experimental songs (Impaler, Distorting A Code, and Driving Song) struck a chord with my inner restless teenager, and with the side of me that can appreciate the melodrama of synth textures and stomp-and-romp. I loved the album as a whole, but I'm on the side that wishes there was a version of 'Valium Knights' somewhere in the mix. Keep it up, fellas! Can't wait to hear what sounds you concoct next!

When I first heard that Brody Dalle had a new side project to the Distillers, I'll admit to initially not paying much attention. I've never really found the Distillers to be all that thrilling to listen to. I have always loved the sound of her voice though, so it was a shame that I didn't like her music as much as I wanted to. Everything changed when I heard this record. It is so loud and raw and well-produced. There aren't a lot of other records that sound like this, and that's a shame. The really stand-out track on the entire album is "Baptized by Fire," but I'll admit that my favorite track is the next one, "A Spectral Suspension."

It's sort of interesting that all of her work with the Distillers came out while she was married to Tim Armstrong, and the Distillers ended up sounding a lot in the vein of pop-punk like Rancid, and after the divorce had no new music until after she had married Josh Homme, and the new stuff as Spinnerette is a lot more in the vein of Queens of the Stone Age. I guess it's true that you're influenced by who you're around. I'm not even a very big Queens of the Stone Age fan but I think the more technical influence suits her a lot better than 3 chord punk.

I love love love this record! I like the lyrics and the music is great, but what impresses me the most is Brody's vocal range. She goes from an angry growl to sounding really light and pretty. I know this must make someone like Courtney Love very very jealous who could never make her voice and lyrics as diverse as Brody does!

So step aside rock women from the 1990s...it's Brody's time and turn to take over.

I harken back to these words, "...the thing about destiny is it never ever makes mistakes" (Sing Sing Death House). I accept that. The Distillers are gone and buried perhaps, but I'm sure thankful for what they gave me (us). Spinnerette is entitled to their own destiny and the talent displayed on their 1st CD is highly obvious. I know it's not fair to compare, but how else can one describe Spinnerette to someone who hasn't heard them yet? So here goes anyway. In my opinion, this 1st CD is somewhere between Siouxsie and the Banshees and Shirley Manson (Garbage). That's good company to be in. How it compares to the Distillers is...it doesn't. "What a surprise" (Coral Fang), others have called this 'dance music'. Well, I would describe it more like 'alternative'. Either way, this is far from Brody's previous punk releases. Gone are the shallow lyrics and screaming. In fact, I can't recall hearing a single four-letter-word on Spinnerette. Huh?

I got interested in Spinnerette after I had gotten to know The Distillers, a prior Brody Dalle-led group. Spinnerette is different from The Distillers--not really punk--and is pretty darn good in its own right. I love Brody's voice. Definitely a solid album.

Brody Dalle has matured and has taken her music with her. Gone are the spikey hair punk anthems of her previous work, which have been replaced with aggressive, catchy and even danceable at times songs. This has a little bit of everything in the 13 songs (Valium Knights is notably absent) featured on this debut album by Spinnerette. There isn't any real filler on this album and it was well worth the wait. I'm looking forward to more music by Spinnerette.

In truth, when I first heard this disc, I really didn't like it that much. For the next few months it sat on my CD shelf gathering dust. When I pulled it out to give it another shot and listened to it a few more times, I started to really warm up to the disc - now, its one of my favorite CDs. Go buy it!

I bought this on a whim and was blown away after the first listen. For those buying the vinyl version...it's pink and maybe 150 or 180 grams. It also comes with a coupon to download the mp3 version of the album.
