I still don't have any idea how to describe this movie, except maybe to say that its driving theme is that every human being is different and wonderful. That's a pretty good message, and, in the end, it gets that message across more effectively than any other movie I can think of.
The central story of a gay couple wanting to have a baby is just the framework around and through which a kaleidoscope of humanity weaves and spins in endless, vibrant, pulsing diversity. The final scene, with hundreds of people spinning like dervishes in the streets of Madrid, is in some ways one of the corniest scenes I have ever seen, but by the time it ended I was awash in tears of joy. It refused to let me stay detached; it FORCED me to get involved, to surrender to its insistent, relentless determination to move me.
Other reviewers have criticized the jerky editing and the disconnect between the soundtrack and the action, as if people are dancing to different music from what we are hearing. I am convinced ALL of that is intentional.
This is not a normal movie. This movie is like a kid who has discovered something wonderful and will do ANYTHING to get our attention so it can show us what it found. This is a movie determined above all else to shake its viewers OUT of the complacency most movies depend on to tell their stories. It grabs us by the shoulders and shakes us awake, so it can show us what a wonderful world we live in, and how wonderful every single one of us is.
That is the basic plot and then there are loads of stories that are unrelated, except that they are about love. We have an Indian male and female, who live out their passions and fights on or near a park bench. They are never seen speaking. There is a news vendor whose wife is pregnant and has told him she also has a lover, the child could be either of theirs. My two favourites are a couple of gay cops, who keep trying to find if they are compatible by comparing lists of random subjects.
There is also familial misunderstandings and a custody suit. Plus some apparently mad woman who just wants someone to be her `de fact partner' - she asks anyone and everyone.
Couple all the above with random extras, including a guy who for no reason pirouettes onto the screen (in a tutu), and pirouettes off - for no apparent reason, a dancing fat bloke and people who seem to be keeping a running tally of how many kisses certain characters have had. These at first act like alienation devices, but after a while they become part of the fabric of the film.
I know it all sounds disjointed and a bit mixed up, but it sort of works, there are a lot of issues dealt with including HIV, loss, bereavement and heaps and heaps of love. That is what saves this film, it has an almost childish attitude to affection, and the warmth that comes across pulls it all together. I felt it could have benefitted from some editing, but this is an unusual film, and it was probably the directors intention to include so many disparate scenes, as this is a tapestry and should be appreciated for that.
If you think `avant garde' is French for `crap', then you will not enjoy, if you like European cinema and things a bit left of field, this will put a smile on your face.
