Ms. Rogers' writing style is wonderful, with just the right balance of dialogue and description. The characters voices are uniquely individual with fitting personalities for both the heroes and villains. The plot is tight with a bit of suspense and a twist or two.
This book is clean and suitable for any reader. It is free of sex, vulgar language and explicit violence.
The story was the driving force in the book. Though there are no "sexy times" I really felt the story didn't need it since the romance between the H and the h was really lovely, regardless. The h is feisty and you have to admire her wanting to find her own way. The H is a bit gruff, but he is rather thoughtful and is a good judge of character. My favorite character was his valet, Franklin.
The H's true identity and enigma behind his refusal to marry are a puzzle until about half way through. I did feel that the love story was thrown together a little too quickly. I wanted more feuding between neighbors! Law students and lawyers will really appreciate references to English common law riparian rights and adverse possession and even statutes of limitations. That aside the banter and dialogue between the two would be lovers is really charming.
The h has a really good head on her shoulders. She's no wilting wall flower, or shrinking violet. She's got a good deal of backbone though she also has her vulnerable moments. I liked her immensely, but I also think she's a bit too perfect. She has no prejudices and she's a bit of a bluestocking and she had absolutely no character flaws. I don't think I actually know any women like that. Her love is almost a foregone conclusion as is his. It would have been a very good romance novel had there been a little more friction before resolution.
But the resolution of the quarrel between them, though rushed, was inevitable because the H is a perfect gentleman. A little too perfect. I don't think I know any men like him either. He is the victim of his circumstances, and emotionally vulnerable, and in that respect they both have a good deal in common along with backbone and grit.
Still, the love story was pushed aside in the third arc to solve the mystery, which was predictable if you read mystery novels. Everything was tied up somewhat neatly in the end. The mystery's "Ah-Ha!" reveal came very quickly and it kind of made you wanting a little more violence to the bad guy. Also, the wrapping up of the familial ties for the H was unexpected, though pleasant. The people whom you thought were rather evil and heartless took a 180 degree turn in the third arc, while the who-done-it mystery was resolving itself.
All in all, a solid 4 star novel, with an additional 1/2 star for the funny banter.
