by Lee Isserow
(THE FREELANCERS #1)
Immediately I was totally engrossed in this story, and am eagerly anticipating the next in this new series. Author Lee Isserow has quite the imagination, and here he successfully balances magic and mundaneity, weaving them together in such a way that opening a door to another country seems natural, as does demolecularizing oneself to pass through walls and fences. <smile> I readily suspended any disbelief and threw myself into the story line. Magickian Rafe Carter, the scion of a line of strong magickians, is himself—not quite. He's feckless, determined, knowledgeable—but life just keeps throwing him wrenches in the works, tripping him up, no matter how determined and dedicated is he.
The twists are sharp and unexpected, the characters are truly delightful. This story is definitely a winner in my estimation.
The author generously provided a digital ARC at no cost, for review purposes. This is my fair and impartial review.
What makes it so outstanding.. I strongly suggest you read it and find out, you wont be sorry. 😬
rather than performing as most of the other girls at The Factory do.
Rafe is a petty thief and 'glamour' - a low-level Magickan - who can be hired by senior paranormals who need his skills of
'amnesia-induction' and illusion manufacturing.
When this unlikely couple have a close encounter in the course of one of Rafe's commissions, following the gruesome death
of her (supposed) grandmother and the awful events that ensue, there is a definite spark between them that is more than
just Rafe's futile attempts to work his 'glamour' on Ana.
What is the secret of the eponymous Spirit Box? What was contained within that has now been released?
How did the Box come into Ana's possession? Who is Crawford and what secret is he hiding from Rafe?
How does Ana discover the truth about her grandmother - and her grandfather?
Who is a Mundane in Ana's family? How does her grandfather regard this person and what is she to Ana?
Why does the Magickan who's 'ordered' the Box want it so badly?
What magick powers does Ana seemingly possess - and who is the father who gave them to her?
With more than a passing nod to Harry Potter and the original Alien film, events unfold in a most unlikely and enthralling way -
sometimes slowly and at others at breakneck speed, which will take your breath away!
A definite best-seller from the talented Lee Isserow - and one not to be missed!

It's not a nightmare if you're awake...Ana's grandmother has died in a horrific fashion. Soon, she finds herself under assault by the same supernatural forces. With nowhere else to turn to, Rafe, a low-level magical detective comes to her aid. He's been tracking the creature, and the box that appears to draw it forth. Together, they set out to put an end to the malevolent fiend once and for all. But all is not as it seems with the entity that's hunting Ana down. Nor is all as it seems with Rafe, or Ana for that matter. Everyone has secrets, and some secrets are powerful enough to kill.
Rafe is a not-too-successful Magickian detective, tasked with retrieving a magickal box. Ana invented an alter-ego, Clarissa, to make her work of being a video-sex operator easier. When Ana's grandmother is magickally murdered, Ana and Rafe's paths cross repeatedly until they start working together to solve the mystery.
This is a fast-paced mystery that combines magick, murder, and a who-dunnit you have to read. The characters behave believably in unbelievable circumstances. Slight sexual content is 'clean'.
