Where was the lesbian stuff in this story?
I was shocked to read the reviews and see that some folks were upset about the "lesbian " part.
Any way ,I loved this story. The idea of spirit guides and a rebellious child who will be able to save everyone,if she survives,2 capable women,no 3,I forgot Nashotah are a pleasure to read about.
Now we have to wait for the next book.
Since I've enjoyed reading all of Alison Holts books,I'm going to wait patiently for each new addition.
The world the author created in this book is superb. I've never heard of the concept of 'Spirit Guides' before, but I found it unique and refreshing. It was intricate enough to keep you interested in learning more, but not so complex that you got lost in the details.
The characters of Bree and Kaiti are well developed. Readers get an excellent sense of who they are, and how these two, though not biologically related, may be the most touching mother daughter pair I've read in a while. There are some hints between Bree and her friend Becca towards a lesbian romance, and while that is not my taste, it is a very, very minor part of the story and not overt or exaggerated at all.
Though the majority of the story in terms of plot was very well written, the last fourth or so of the book is what took a couple stars away. Just when I was getting so in depth with the story and actions with Bree and Kaiti, it does a major shift focus to another woman. Though her character was nicely structured, it seemed random to put so much focus on her suddenly and it ignored Bree and Kaiti for a sizable portion. The shift seemed unnecessary and in my opinion, unwanted.
Overall, if any of this sounds like something you would like, I would recommend it to you. It is definitely a quick read and moderately paced. I'm not sure if I personally would read a sequel, but I think other readers have a lot of potential to fall for this book.
I received a free ebook in exchange for an honest review.
Alison's love and respect for Native Peoples, frontier/ranch life, animals tame, wild, exotic, and her understanding of human nature are interwoven with her love of fantasy, feminism, and humor to create a tale of healing and growth that is surprising in its intensity. This tale ends all too soon, (admittedly I read through the night more than once)....and left me begging for more.
This many-genre piece is rich from many disciplines that Alison is acquainted with first hand. It is stamped with her compassion, wisdom, and humor. Rich as the settings are, it is the characters that shine diamond bright. You can not help but want to sit at the Wise man's feet, comfort the throw-a-way child, and the broken widow who will not let pain near her again, interact with her characters, encourage and even , dare I say it, advise them a bit, tho they need that not. = ). These are people I would be proud to name friends and teachers.
As I devoured this text, I was surprised to find that significant healing occured in my life unbeknownst to me....and in sharing it reached out and did the same in others I know well. Bravo Alison. Books that make a difference are a rare and precious gift. I thank you and wait with baited breath for the tapestry to begin again. Thank you!
I think you will find.....if in need of a great read, you are welcome here. If you like to learn something new as you are entertained...you are welcome here....enjoy! If you are a person of passion, you will recognize yourself here. and find welcome too.
Set in a world similar to the Middle Ages, there is a strong influence of Native American tribal culture and spiritualism implicit throughout. The danger is real and immediate. The humanity is three-dimensional, as is the personal growth of the main characters. The personal pain and torment of the both the Duchess and the Spirit Child has depth, from which they have the opportunity to grow. Spirit Guides are personal, both spiritual and real. They are woven in ways that are not necessarily obvious. Both Human and Spirit Guide have to grow and learn from each other. They each must protect and be protected. From that, the story grows.
I highly recommend this book. I am very glad that this is only Book One. There is so much story to tell. I cannot wait for the next book!
