Having already long ago fully digested what Con Funk Shun albums are in print (I have their two greatest hits volumes and two studio albums)'Spirit Of Love' comes as wonderful surprise from 1980.The 'hit' "Got To Be Enough" is very indicative of most of this album-smooth,uptempo funky soul in the heavy EWF'ish mode CFS do so well. The title cut and "Happy Face" follow suit. That's because these people can WRITE THE HELL out of a song! And I think the final cut "Lovestruck 1980" is great-a very clever fusion of horn heavy funk groove and eurodisco production elements-kind of Con Funk Shun's answer to "Boogie Wonderland".

As is more then indicated by their name their is still room for rootsy funk on "Curtain Call" and smooth 'quiet storm' balladry on "Honey Wild".The music on 'Spirit Of Love' will make you want to do a dance, bop your head, move from side to side and it might even woo you and your lover in parts. After all isn't that what this kind of music is all about. For the serious music fan the instrumentation here is so fantastic you'll be in awe of that too.So this really works in all areas.

I first got into Con Funk Shun due to their early 80s hit such as "Baby, I'm Hooked Right Into Your Love" and "Loves Train," but before 1982, they were much more funk/dance floor savvy with the dance grooves "Candy," "Chase Me," "Ffun," and "Got To Be Enough." Spirit of Love was in competition with other funk albums circa late 1979-early 1980 like Cameosis (from Cameo), Injoy (The Bar Kays), and Ladies Night (Kool & The Gang), but Con Funk Shun still kept the hits coming on strong and the lp earned them another gold record. "Got To Be Enough" (#8 on the R&B charts) and "Happy Face (#87 on the R&B charts)" were some of the dancefloor pleasers and Soul Train line favorites while "Honey Wild" and "By Your Side" were the golden ballads that showcased more of the band's tender side. Unlike their previous releases, Spirit of Love was divided equally with funk, mid-tempo grooves, and slow jams which was a smart move being that disco was on its final years (Con Funk Shun's songs were more soul/funk flavored than disco songs like "Ladies Night" and "Rock With You"). This album and their second 1980 release Touch are the go-getters to add on your 80s R&B playlists.

I grew up with ConFunkShun, Bros Johnson, LTD, the Blackbyrds, Ohio Players, BT Express, and on and on and on. This music was my life and now 27 years later as I go back online trying to find the CD versions of the original vinyl that I had of all my favorites, it takes me back to my childhood, Jr. High and High School and those precious early twenties.. in this era of hot and fun music. Music that was sexy and exciting and so different from today. It stands out and you can tell when you hear it. I still have my original vinyl collection that I started at age 15. A friend turned me onto this genre and it is still my number one. Confunkshun, of course was one of those I partied with and all the songs bring back such wonderful memories of my past. Festival seating concerts sans lipsynching, Cruising, great kegs, hot nights, long summers, freedom...Music will never be like this again. I'm so glad I was able to experience this.

Spirit of Love has ConFunkShun moving out of the disco era with this first album of the 80's. This is a quality gem that features some dance and sweet ballad numbers. "Got to be Enough" is one of the radio staples, as well as "By Your Side". The title track is superb, and "Curtain Call" is the funkiest track on this album. "All Up To You" is probably my favorite track here, and excellent ballad that is nothing short of melodic. Good listen throughout. If you can find it cheap, scoop it up.

What can I say. Back in the day, CON FUNK SHUN definitely was "no joke". Within their stream of works there were six classic-albums that no serious R&B collection would be complete without and "SPIRIT OF LOVE" is one of them.

One of the best albums released by Confunkshun...I have always been a fan of the group and "Spirit of Love" was probably the most even and consistent release, glad to see all the catalogue being re-released!
