And in inter-weaving the ordinary and extraordinary experiences of its heroine, its how's that her empowering intuitive and 'super-normal' perceptions are innate capabilities of all of us, if we choose to be open to them.
DR JUDE CURRIVAN COSMOLOGIST, PLANETERY HEALER, FUTURIST AND AUTHOR OF THE COSMIC HOLOGRAM
Hughes delivers a complex case of weighty history, violent trauma, and untold mystery in this debut paranormal thriller. The novel's short chapters and tight pacing keep the pages turning and allow for rapid shifts between characters' points of view without becoming confusing.
The prose never neglects description but tackles it efficiently, couching it in the characters' natural voices. The prose grounds the action quickly, and Rosetta, [a Psychic Detective,] as a character, connects with readers powerfully and immediately; her anger and sense of duty ring true from the outset.
KIRKUS REVIEWS [Professional Review]
The combination of paranormal, crime, and sci-fi genres with an intriguing premise will hook any readers who really appreciate a healthy fusion of themes.
The prose is clear cut and the transitions between different characters' POVs as well as the timeline are deftly handled. The plot is well thought out, and much more intricate and extensive than anticipated.
Overall, Spirit of Prophecy is a roller-coaster journey of intrigue and suspense, a very solid read from Hughes.
Spirit of Prophecy can only be described as a dramatic, thrilling and exciting novel that will keep readers entertained, captivated and engrossed from the very first page. Never before have I been so captivated by a supernatural story and this is thanks to the exceptional author J.J. Hughes and her talented literature and so, if you are a reader who loves fantasy/paranormal and supernatural reads then you will adore this as it is stellar!
As I read Spirit of Prophecy, I immediately was drawn into the book and felt captivated by Hughes's spellbinding literature. The text is detailed but not too dense, it is beautifully written so that the reader is able to immerse themselves in the story from beginning to end without difficulty. There are no long build-ups that drag; instead, the reader will be thrown into the thick of it quickly, and the result of this is exciting (and slightly terrifying!).
Overall Spirit of Prophecy... has a thrilling narrative, magnificent plot development and excellent characterization that will thrill and excite its readers so of course, I have to award this impressive piece of literature five stars!

About the book - What if your past came back to haunt you and stalked the present until it became your worst nightmare? What would you do if you discovered you’re engaged to a murderous psychopath about to go serial?
J.J. Hughes explores the lengths to which we will go, to keep the past from overshadowing the present and destroying the future. Spirit of Prophecy is a highly original, cutting edge, metaphysical crime mystery with a breathtaking paranormal twist.
Years ago, a terrible atrocity occurred in Apache Indian territory in New Mexico, and now the players take up their positions to execute a horrific revenge. If you liked A.G. Riddle’s The Atlantis Gene you’ll love this .
Evil awakens, and Rosetta Barrett, a psychic detective, must settle old scores and heal ancient wounds. She has the highest international security clearance with the Elite Paranormal Intelligence Services [EPIS], but she can’t tell her family or the courts what she really does. Divorce was hell. She lost custody of her children because of her paranormal beliefs and abilities, and now she’s fighting to get them back.
Whenever I read a good book there is nothing I love more than passing it on to others to read and enjoy, I'm not stingy lol. If you're contemplating getting this book, go ahead it's a really good book.
The author did a fantastic job on this book, the writing was of a high literary quality and the characters can be related with, he made it so realistic which is one of the reasons I really enjoyed reading this book, right from the first page the pace of the book was steadily built and the pace and tempo increased as it went on, it got to a point I was so hooked I couldn't stop till I finished reading it. An all round complete and interesting book about fantasy and mystery, filled with lots of lessons to be learnt which I strongly recommend and I'll proudly give four out of five stars.
The story begins with a strange hit and run accident. Successful horse riders, Juliet her her friend Isabella are riding their horses, when all of a sudden a car chases after Isabella and her horse. The girl later dies in a hospital and the case takes on a mysterious turn when a psychic, Rosetta, begins to investigate not only the facts, but mainly the issues beneath the surface. Many philosophical questions are raised and explored throughout this unusual, visionary thriller. I was mainly impressed with how the author managed to balance spirituality with entertainment.
I also appreciated the author’s notes in the end, which were touching and wise, and made me believe that she has a lot to offer through her books. I recommend this book to readers who are looking for something original and thought-provoking.
Rosetta dreams about, Juliet, a star in a horse event competition, she is riding on a country road with a teenage student, Isabella. Isabella is riding Juliet’s top eventing horse, Gothic. They are attacked in what appears to be a road-rage incident, and Isabella and Gothic are killed (Not a spoiler alert, as this is in the beginning of the book) but it’s actually a hit man. And the story just gets more fascinating from there.
The author did a great job on this book, the writing was good, the characters relatable. Read the book to find out what the ancient evil is that was awakened.
The thing that I liked about the book was that it offered many jig saw puzzles and in some places the author allowed the readers to solve these puzzles ahead of the protagonist. For example in the initial part of the novel, the heroine Rosetta Barrett is haunted by a nightmare. She tries to piece together her nightmare to come up with a clue. However, where she fails, the readers are able to solve this puzzle by knowing that something bad would happen to the horse Gothic. Still, the authoress is the expert puppeteer and she handles her characters well so that we are actually shocked at the climax and the various revelations.
The story is smooth and progresses at a steady pace through the eyes of different characters. Hence, instead of one know it all orator we get to know the thoughts of different people and their various characters are revealed in a gradual manner. As a woman I appreciated that most of the actions (positive) were initiated by the females and they were the really drivers who propelled the story on its track. I for myself greatly enjoyed the book and look forward to more such stories and if possible a sequel with the main characters.
Top international reviews
Juliet Jermaine isn’t likeable, caring more about the threat to her Olympic hopes due to the loss of her horse than the young rider who died of her injuries, but J. J. Hughes draws a brilliant picture of a woman driven to succeed at any cost.
There’s much more to the story, which is set in the future – not too far, but enough for science to have progressed to an intriguingly convincing level, and the threads running through it are international, and many recognisable even today.
From first chapter a fast-moving shotgun-spread of background information immerses the reader right into the book’s journey and from there on each chapter builds the mystery. The author projects a superb portrayal of each personality’s humour and I would suspect a well-researched range of ‘character’ personal experiences have been mined for her latest novel. Funny how, in a good book, one can also connect with parts of some of the characters and feel a personal involvement in the story. All the characters have depth, and certainly some quirkiness, with perhaps a touch of Peter James in a few; you’ll either find them endearing or make you feel a sincere loathing. I won’t tell you about the twist in the depths of the novel but from there on it’s a race to the end with a book you’ll find hard to put down - just make sure no one can interrupt you.
Hope I don't have to wait to long before the next book lands on my Kindle.
The story moves along at a satisfying pace with enough detail and enough action to keep you turning the pages. The characters have depth and they engage your emotions. In particular Rosetta, the central character, is well drawn and fascinating.
The subject matter, particularly the AI elements, are thought provoking while the twists within the story are well timed and engrossing.
The assured writing and rich blend of characters make Spirit of Prophecy a winner.
It’s a mixture of a detective novel with paranormal undertones.
The characters were all very believable and you felt you knew them and their feelings.
Definitely recommend. When’s the next one coming out?
Characters are not only well written, they actually seem real. Juliet, one of the protagonists, a professional horse rider, suffers an enormous setback when her Olympic horse Gothic dies in a terrible and unprovoked road rage attack. As a reader I could totally identify with Juliet, she’s strong, determined and extremely ambitious. But her ambition is also her greatest weakness as she is about to betray her best friend and lose the love of her life for the sake of her career.
Rosetta, a psychic detective investigating Gothic’s murder is a completely different, but nonetheless intriguing character. The author covers some bang up-to-date topics like artificial intelligence or the work of parapsychologists. Of course the book is fictional, but some facts are really interesting and thought-provoking.
Normally I’m not keen on an author writing in multiple perspectives, but J. J. Hughes manages to connect the different storylines brilliantly so the flow of reading isn’t disturbed at all.
I just finished reading it and this is one of the few books I’d really like to continue since it was so good! Hoping for a sequel, can’t wait to read more books by J. J. Hughes!
mystery, psychic insight, past-life connections, romance, disappointed love and trust, plus - if that’s not enough yet- it adds a sound spiritual message to an accomplished mix of genres. It already captured me after three pages and I found it hard to put the book down. A great holiday read!! The author made it onto my list of regulars. Really hoping for a sequel - and soon that is!
