Spirit of Prayer Kindle Edition

4.3 out of 5 stars 31 ratings

Influenced by the writings of German mystic, Jacob Boehme, William Law wrote two related works of mysticism: The Spirit of Love and The Spirit of Prayer. Written by Law in the 1750’s, these books emphasize Law’s own creative interpretation of mysticism, which relies heavily on the indwelling of Christ in the believer’s soul. The Spirit of Prayer contains a series of prayers and dialogues which focus on the profound love of God. Law intended his writings to help readers renew their understanding of the holy life. He encourages his readers to follow God’s calling in this poetic passage: “When therefore the first spark of a desire after God arises in thy soul, cherish it with all thy care, give all thy Heart into it, it is nothing less than a touch of the Divine. Get up therefore and follow it as gladly, as the Wise Men of the East followed the Star from Heaven that appeared to them. It will do for thee, as the Star did for them, it will lead thee to the birth of Jesus, not in a stable at Bethlehem in Judea, but to the Birth of Jesus in the dark centre of thy own fallen Soul.” Law is sensitive and wise in his words. Readers find themselves at first convicted and then comforted by Law’s The Spirit of Prayer.
This edition features an artistic cover, a new promotional introduction, and a hierarchical table of contents.

William Law is a master who has for to long been forgotten and needs to be resurrected for the serious student who seeks a deeper spiritual life. It should be understood that he will demand you think, meditate, and even reread his work because f its depth. The present one on prayer as an introductory chapter on the fall of man, before he leads you into a discussion on communion with the Lord, it will be beneficial I know to all who take the time to read this demaning yet enlightening book.

law writes as many authors of his time, with different ways of explaining the same concept, which can be helpful or tedious, depending on your intent with this book. i chose the former intent.

his teacher/student set up, though not original, is particularly helpful in that the various students ask him questions as the reader might.

very clear and straightforward book, getting to the basics of how to "walk humbly with thy God." (micah 6:8)

I have been reading some of the older writers and sure wish I knew about them years ago. I guess when you are young you think you have to read the most current books and don't pay attention to old ones. My eyes have been opened to things I have never heard or just wasn't ready for.

The Spirit of Prayer talks about the attitude in which we are to pray. The book leads us into an attitude that relates to the relationship we have with a Holy God. Humility is very important in that relationship. Seeking God is vital to the spiritual walk of every believer. Read this book to get a better handle on what God expects from us and what we will receive from Him.

I haven't started reading it because the print is so minute I am not able to see it without great difficulty. Couldn't wait to get it. I am now looking for a copy that has reasonable size print. If anyone knows of one I would love to hear about it.
