WOW! Get sucked into this one, and hold on for one intense ride. Although this is the third book in the series, in my opinion it can be read as a standalone. I have yet to read the first two in the series, but this one caught my eye.
This story has great character interaction and an intense plot, full of mystery, evil, and plenty of action. This book will hook you and keep you until the very last page.
This book is just 199 pages, but there’s a lot going on. Voodoo, Hoodoo, curses and spells abound. Luc even has time to become romantically involved with a young Voodoo priestess. I did feel that the book got slightly bogged down with a lot of details and lengthy dialogue, and at times the plot seemed to drag a bit for my taste. I did appreciate that the author brought readers up to speed with Luc’s backstory. So, even though this is book 3 in the series, you don’t need to read books 1 and 2 to know what’s going on.
There’s quite a bit of strong language and some sexual situations in this book. In fact, I’m surprised there’s no mention of this, since many readers seem to be bothered by these things. The writing is good and it did compel me to read on. The editing was impeccable – something I always appreciate.
All in all I’d have to say this wasn’t a bad read. It’s interesting and action-packed for sure.
Jon-Luc is rescued from the street and the gang he is running with by Frank Thibodeux, who becomes Luc's benefactor; mentor and surrogate father.
Over the past 8 months, 8 children have been kidnapped and have completely disappeared. In Louisiana there are many places that a person, let alone a child, can disappear. In Louisiana there is good magick and bad magick - Voodoo and Hoodoo.
Luc is visited by Charlotte who takes him to the bayou, shows him a group of children and then tells him he has to save them. While researching the dead children, Luc and his tutor Jake (he can talk to ghosts), realise they need spiritual assistance and visit Mama Arelia and Celestine, practitioners of good magick - Voodoo.
With the help of Clara, Mama Arelia, Celestine and the NOPD, in the form of Detective Dubois, Luc saves the children , but comes face to face with and is marked by evil personified.
If you like Louisiana mystique, stories of voodoo, with a few ghosts thrown in for good measure, you'll like Spirits of the Bayou. Author Morgan Hannah McDonald will make you smell the backwater as you run with a few of Luc's unwholesome friends and weave your way through the Garden District looking for the next home to break and enter. And that Haitian cook...her strange dialect gives the book special creole flavor. Of course, you know what they say about New Orleans ladies... Good book. Grab a copy.
