A good read in this genre, the novel has some construction issues that do not detract from the intrigue the writer presents with plausible characters. A book that you won't want to put down, the story is recommended for anyone interested in the paranormal, particularly fans of television shows like "Ghost Hunters" and "Paranormal Activity."
For those interested: Sexual situations (some violent) may offend some readers.
Well, "Spirits In The Trees" stuck with me. I was up most of the night because of that book. At one point, I actually turned on my computer and read a bit more, hoping to find a slower, less creepy, section so I could make myself sleepy enough to go to bed. No such luck. I think I finally fell asleep around 5AM, only to have the alarm go off at 7. I read the rest of the book first thing that morning so I had a nice long time to get it out of my head before bedtime.
I don't know exactly what it was about this book that kept me awake. There is no "fancy writing with big words", no "filler adjectives" describing every tiny bit of the story... just plain writing, as though I were sitting at the kitchen table, coffee in front of me, listening to a friend telling me the story. I'd like to say there was nothing memorable about the book (other than a lot of good entertainment), but obviously that would be a lie. Morgan Hannah MacDonald simply managed to get into my head and under my skin and keep me awake most of the night.
I will read the rest of the books in this series because of this itchy feeling in the back of my mind that insists I have to find out what's next. However, I will start the books first thing in the morning, preferably on a dreary, rainy day so I won't have to worry about being interrupted, and I will read the entire thing all at once. If the other books in this series are as good and effectively scary/creepy as "Spirits In The Trees", I know I will be a lifelong fan of anything written by MacDonald.
