This is a useful guide for anyone who engages in spiritual direction, or even for pastoral counselling. It was written in the 90's, but I haven't found anything more recent. As a spiritual counselor, we can have some preconceptions that we bring to the process that can impede the process of discernment and make it more difficult for those whom we counsel to follow the gentle promptings of the Spirit. That becomes a situation in which we do much more harm than good, if any good at all. There is definitely a deficit of this kind of literature to guide us in the process. I think this is a must read for anyone who engages in spiritual direction or spiritual counseling as a counselor/director/companion, because you never really know if the person you are counseling is gay. It is also useful for anyone who is gay or lesbian who seeks spiritual direction

This book not only has very good insights regarding spiritual direction for the gay person but for spiritual direction in general. Very good insights into human growth and development and the role spiritual direction can play in their development.

Jake Empereur was one of my professors during my Masters of Divinity studies at the Graduate Theological Union. He was a brilliant teacher and a strong influence on my own theology of ritual and sacrament.
While this book does not deal with ceremony, per se, I've thought about Jake now that same sex couples have the right to legally marry in California. In that the book explores issues of spiritual direction for gay people, it really is a book that explores spirituality and gay person. For anyone who is going to actively minister to gay couples seeking to marry this is a wonderful resource that will help to deepen one's own spirituality and appreciation for ritual and ceremony.
This is a neglected gem!

I was joked about reading this book by my lifetime best friend (The man that I love). He said that spiritual direction is spiritual direction. Given that caveat, The author did an excellent job of bringing much that is in Catholic theology to bear on the peculiar spiritual reality of gay people. Though I disagreed with some of the statements, not all, that were more of a psychological/sociological nature which gave unfounded views of why we are so hated that seem at variance with what little research has been done, as well as some what we might call genderist statements, the core understandings, that relate directly to our situation/experience, were absolutely true at least for me. I originally had read a copy of this book on loan from a friend. I bought it for myself and have reread it and am giving it to friends who are gay and trying to grow spiritually. I read somewhere that gay men are alienated from God. Though the author deals with this possible alienation extremely well(Something that I indeed have experienced.), it has always seemed to me that many gay men are indeed very spiritual, that even in our alienation we are trying to find God again. Perhaps the reason why so many of us have ended up in the clergy. It is sad how many of our churches try to hide that fact; how many of us have lived trying to survive by pretending to be what we are not. At any rate I would recommend this book to any one interested in spiritual growth whether as a spiritual director working with gay people or for a gay man or woman who is interested in his/her own spiritual growth.
