Are you too tired, busy, discouraged or stressed in church leadership? I highly recommend this book if you want a complete transformation of how you view leadership and spiritual formation. They can not be separated. Chuck Miller's timely words will encourage your faith, shift your ministry focus and reignite the passion in your relationship with Jesus. Getting back to these basics will contagiously change your daily lifestyle. Get the book, devour it and share it! This makes for a great group study as it has questions at the end of each chapter for discussion.

It is my belief that this book will never go very far in the modern American church because today’s ministry models are fast paced Facebook tweeting entertainment value programs. Chuck Miller is the most gifted man I have ever met to teach someone how to grow and develop spiritually. But the process is a slow and daily walk with God rather than service based. It has been my experience that if you grow someone the right way, you will not be able to stop them from serving, in that, service becomes a direct reflection of their relationship with God. I don’t have many books in my library that I say are must haves besides the Bible but this one is. If you work in any type of ministry and/or leadership position, it is a must have…!

This book is ultimately about how we should first maintain and nurture our personal relationship with God before we can be good leaders in our churches. This is a theme and truth that I have heard multiple time in my life by different pastors in different churches. The choice to include the term "spiritual formation" in the title cause quite an uproar in our church that required a statement from our pastoral staff and elders. Some of our more conservative members lumped the spiritual formation being taught in this book with the bad metaphysical/eastern mysticism form of spiritual formation being taught by others.

Maybe the title of the book would have been better serve as "Soul Room Leadership In A Post Modern Age." Just a thought.

The book is definitely a good read and resource for not only church leadership but for anyone who is active in the body of Christ.

There are several profound topics discussed in this book. So it is an important book for anyone serious about Spiritual Leadership Formation. Having said that, this would be a five star book if it just stuck with the profound topics instead of taking a kitchen sink approach over 300 pages long. The length of the text and the nature of the everyday topics discussed made the book very boring to read; but do not mistake this comment as saying that it is not a must read, you should read it so you can glean the profound wisdom presented relative to many issues leaders deal with; it is a must read but not a well written or conceived book.
Profound topics include:
Building an organization with programs and systems that are required to support an existing organism.
Moving from management to mystery
Integrating healthy relationships and effective organization

These three topics in a 180 page book would be a great book. The rest of what is in the book has been written about extensively and is common knowledge.

Do not miss this book, it is an important work.

Chuck Miller changed my life twice... years ago when I attended one of his Discipleship Seminars, and now again, with the publication of this great, good book. With a pastor's heart and a teacher's skill, the author reminds his readers of all that is true about God's love, and how that love overflows to others. He gives us confidence that we can both know God intimately, and influence others to enjoy the fellowship and communion in a deeper way too. My husband and I have purchased many copies of this book to pass along. It revived my spirit!

After years of leadership, I was burned out and disillusioned about being a leader. Though I have in my library innumerable books on leadership covering a wide range of topics, none of them spoke into my life like Chuck Miller's book. His book provides a much-needed emphasis on the critical importance of establishing an intimate relationship with Jesus Christ and allowing the overflow of this relationship to spill into every sphere of one's ministry. Yes, one knows that it is important to have a vital relationship with Christ and somehow one's devotional life will impact his/her ministry. Chuck Miller connects the dots with a real-life process giving plenty of real-life stories on how the time in the Soul Room shapes and influences the Leadership Room. The entire process is biblically and theologically based in Scripture and is immersed in real-life ministry situations. Chuck has given me--and may well give you--a fresh new hope for a Spirit-energized ministry!

Having heard Chuck Miller speak and after reading and reading his book on "The Formation of Spiritual Leaders", I highly recommend taking the time to plumb it's depths. All too often Christian books on leadership center on "Type A", personality driven positions with some spiritual relief intertwined, rather than from a deep understanding that true Spiritual leadership springs from an intimate relationship with Jesus through the power of the Holy Spirit. Chuck delivers on both the Spiritual side with Strong Leadership concepts blended in. Don't let the long title fool you..."The Formation of Spiritual Leadership" is oozing with practical, poignant and duplicatable concepts that stick in what ever circles you move. It's a Solid 5 Star Read!
