About the author

Boyd C. Purcell, Ph.D., is a National Board Certified Counselor, a Licensed Professional Counselor, a Board Certified Chaplain, and an Ordained Christian Minister. Educationally, he has a Bachelor of Science Degree in Comprehensive Social Studies (World/European/American History, Political Science, etc.). He also has a Master of Arts Degree in Counseling, a Master of Divinity Degree in Biblical Studies, and a Doctor of Philosophy Degree in the integration of Psychology and Theology. Experientially, He has over 40 years of experience in counseling: agency, clinical, pastoral, psychiatric hospital, school, substance abuse, private practice, teaching counseling courses in the Counseling Department of Marshall University Graduate College, and chaplaincy—providing spiritual care at the end of life for hospice patients. Dr. Purcell is also the author of two 5-star rated books, on Amazon.com, "Spiritual Terrorism: Spiritual Abuse from the Womb to the Tomb" and "Christianity Without Insanity: For Optimal Mental/Emotional/Physical Health."
Dr. Purcell has super-condensed his two books into a very small booklet, “SALTED WITH FIRE: Five Liberating Truths—Symbolic Fire in Religions.” The most-concise summary [3x5 inch card/bookmarker] of his theological perspective is, “The Gospel in a Nutshell: Salvation of ALL Simple as ABCs.” He has written a brochure to prevent children from being spiritually abused/terrorized, “Spiritual Abuse IS Child Abuse” and another brochure to free victims of spiritual abuse from morbid fear of God, “The Three Most Liberating Truths of the Christian Faith.” Biblical fear means reverence for God based on a sense of awe about God. In regard to LGBTQAI issues, Dr. Purcell has written an article, “The Complexity of Human Sexuality,” to help bring about understanding in order to make our world, presently so torn by religious strife, tolerant and peaceful.
Dr. Purcell was born in Kentucky where he lived until his family moved to Northern Ohio. He grew up in Ohio where he lived, went to college, graduate school, and seminary, and worked for almost 30 years. He graduated from Bowling Green State University in 1965 with his Bachelor Degree, in Comprehensive Social Studies, and in 1966 with his Master Degree in Counseling. He graduated from Ashland University Theological Seminary in 1974 with a Master of Divinity Degree, in Biblical Studies, and earned his Doctor of Philosophy Degree, in the integration of psychology and theology, from Oxford Graduate School in 1988. He has resided in the Charleston area of West Virginia for the last 40 years. He is an honorably retired Presbyterian minister whose ministry was chaplaincy—providing spiritual care at the end-of-life for hospice patients.

I was raised in a somewhat Christian home...my mother did her best to teach me what she knew about God, which, as I have come to understand, wasn't much (at the time), because, due to no fault of her own, she was raised in a spiritually abusive home herself! It's amazing how these things cycle, isn't it? So, I was raised on a steady diet of fearing:
*Satan/demons
*Being left behind (the rapture)
*Forever burning in hell, in addition to my non-believing family members, whom I loved dearly
This all started at around age 7, so for the next 5 years, I wrestled with questions about what happens to people who don't hear the "good news," what happens to babies when they die (and mentally ill folks), and the biggest question- why did God even bother to create anything, if he knows everything, and ultimately a vast majority of his creation will end up in the eternally burning trash heap called "hell?"
None of this made any sense, when put side by side with the idea that "this" god was somehow good, but, because I was always told "his ways are higher than mine," I assumed I must be a simple, unregenerate, sinful little boy (yeah I had those vocab words at age 7...), so, if you can imagine, my life was nothing but an anxiety ridden nightmare, until sometime around 12, 13, when I decided that if was going to go to hell, I might as well enjoy it- that's because I found a stash of old Playboys, and, being that I was already going to hell, I might as well enjoy myself (can you really blame me)?
That being said, I chucked "Christianity" for about 10 years, until, for some weird reason, I had an inkling to look into this Jesus character one last time, just to see if there was any credibility to all these claims about "getting saved," and what not. I decided that a) If I looked into the validity of Jesus and found him to be true, then I would follow him, and b) If I looked into the credibility of Jesus and found out that there was nothing to follow, then, at least if he were real, on "judgment day" I could at least say "Hey, I searched for you, (like you said), and I didn't find you..." So, either way, I figured I had my bases covered. I had no idea.
Around age 22, after looking in to Jesus' claims of divinity, by reading various books, but staying primarily with the Bible, after about 2 months, I gave up. I didn't feel like I was getting anywhere, and none of this stuff was making any sense- especially the part in John 3 about being "born again." I got frustrated, confused, and angry. Eventually I said "Jesus if you are real, then you need to prove it to me!" All I can say is that when I said that, I was given a revelation of love like I had never known. I knew a number of things simultaneously; I knew that I was loved, and that I always had been. I knew that I was unquestionably forgiven, and I knew that I had treated other people horrifically, and that I needed to reconcile every single relationship that I could- because every single person in the world was of intrinsic, inestimable value! I had never had such clarity, such conviction, and such love in my heart- ever. I also felt assured that the Bible was reliable, accurate, and true, and that Jesus was in fact the Son of God, and I could actually trust him, his Father, and the Spirit. Then, I did the only thing that seemed reasonable: I started going to church.
Without going into any more of my autobiography, let me suffice it so say- myself, and my family have suffered much because of biblical literalism, the doctrine of eternal torment, and the subversion of the fatherhood of God. This book has and is still helping me to heal, and I highly recommend it to everyone who has grown up in church- chances are, you have been spiritually abused, and you are not OK- you are surviving. God bless you Boyd. Thank you
1. This book explain many psychological disturbances that result, sustain and cause hellfire beliefs. In fact, many of these were revelant to me. In fact, in my last month of being in Fundamentalist Catholicism, I had suffered from severe anxiety, which lead me to leave. Plus I had many of the same feelings of being trapped, with no way out, and clinging to strict obedience to the letter of the Church law, despite how abusive it was. In fact, a little after I had left this traditionalism, I became very cynical, almost an atheist, till I kept running into Christian Universalism sources while trying to refute Organized religion and Christianity. Even after coming to CU, I still had strong feelings of anger towards traditional Christianity, and anything associated with it. But this was just how I felt. But the whole psychological analysis does explain a lot about why there are so many problems with relgion today. Such as why George Carlin became a Cynical Atheist, why there have been so many acts of hypocrisy in the Churches, why most Religious violence in this millenium came from Christianity and Islam, why so many people zealously defend their image of God, and pretend that their image of Hellfire can still create a loving God.
2. This book is not biased in the way other Denominations or religions are represented. The book is not politically correct, where other religions and denominations have to be painted in a pristine light. Dr. Purcell in fact does point out where the theology has been abusive, and the abuses committed in the name of that religion. However he does respect other religions and denominations, by pointing out the positives of that religion, and without attacking the non-essentials. This is a great breakthrough, considering that we have a major issue with Political correctness and the "Us vs. Them". These two types are the most outspoken on their positions. But are doing more harm than good. The last thing we need are people pretending nothing is wrong, or people pretending everything is wrong with anyone on the "Them" side, and making the "Us" side look pristine.
3. This book also shows how anyone can understand Universal Salvation, whether they are educated theologians with many degrees, or common laymen. This doctrine can be understood by understanding any traditional religious beliefs, like irresistable grace, Purgatory, the Trinity, Christmas, Eastern Orthodox hell, karma, Sufi Mysticism, the Jewish law, NDE's Reincarnation, ect. The tone of the book seems more geared towards moderate Catholic, Orthodox, Anglican, and Mainline Protestant Theology. Which is what I am personally more comfortable with, considering I am a moderate Catholic.
4. This book is something that Universalists, Eternal Damnationists, and Annihilationist should read. For Eternal Damnationists, simply because of all the abuse of this doctrine, and all the harm this doctrine has done. With Annihilationists, they are still vulnerable to Spiritual abusive practices, due to the threat of being wiped out of existence, and the whole "Us vs. Them" mindset. Now even Universalists can benefit, due to the fact that spiritual abuse can even exist in Universalist circles. Though the least severe. But this book is good for the Universalist Circles, due to the contempt and the "Us vs. Them" mentality frequently occurring in UR circles. This book proves that to believe in Universal Salvation you do not have to oppose the Church systems, or the historical teachings. Considering that I understand that in many UR circles, there has been a rejection of the Trinity, Churches, other religions, Christmas, Easter, and life after death, and the belief that only Universalist Christians will be saved in this age, and that souls sleep till the ressurection. This book shows the true spirit of Universalism.
