The first third, The World is external, the lust of the flesh (not the same as The Flesh of the second third), the lust of the eyes and the pride of life. The lust of the flesh is anything that causes a physiological response to the mind and body. Not just sex type things, but also food - both gluttony and the constant dieting, alcohol, drugs, and other body or mental urges. The lust of the eyes as per Madison Avenue, constantly barrages you with things you must have because you deserve it, you need it. Jealousy, envy. The Pride of life. Boastful, selfish ambition. Rebellion against God because you know better.
The Flesh (natural man, old sin nature) left over from before conversion is internal solicitation to sin. Galatians 5:19-21, Romans 7:15-25. This sort of temptation we must run from (2 Timothy 2:22-23), renew our minds (Romans 12:1-2) and get controlled by the Holy Spirit each time to overcome.
The Devil. The author uses a 3 part set: oppression, demonization and possession instead of the usual oppression and possession model. It is true demons cannot possess Christians. Only God owns you, since He made you and bought you with a price. Demons like unruly roomers, can only rent a room, not take the whole house.
Only once the World and the Flesh are ruled out we can look at this one. The Devil is solicitation to sin that is definitely not coming from you. One way to tell it's not you or the Holy Spirit is grammar. You see your reflection and the voice in your mind says 'Drat, I really have to lose a few pounds.' The Holy Spirit reminds you it is healthier to lose a few pounds. The devil says 'You're fat, you're ugly, and nobody loves you!' or devils say `We're fat, we're ugly, and no one loves us!' The will of the victim is most important here. If he is not willing to repent of the sins that gave the demon his invasion point, and really wants to get rid of the demon, no amount of exorcism will work.
The author then goes through the steps and explains what to do for a typical exorcism. He then spends 75 pages teaching how to fight strategically, not just sincerely.
